Garlic, C’est Chic

July 2022

Title: Garlic, C’est Chic

Text: Did you plant garlic last fall? Were you one of the people who waited until the first forecast of snow and tucked those cloves in right before the deadline? If yes, you might now be rewarded with a lovely crop. Take the time to harvest your garlic scapes and enjoy them. If you like garlic, these can be tasty grilled or sauteed and added to anything. Pasta, pizza, rice. They have a texture somewhat similar to asparagus when cooked.

Once the scapes have been clipped, begin watching for signs of your garlic being dry enough to harvest. Generally, we pull garlic the week of the 4th of July. Once the first few outer leaves have begun drying, you should be ready to harvest. The garlic will need to finish curing. This can be done in a dry, well ventilated space.

When cured, you might consider making braids for storage, or perhaps clean all the heads and tuck them into a dry, cool spot in your basement/cellar. If cured and stored properly, you can enjoy garlic all year.

Need help with understanding when to harvest or store garlic, or have questions about anything related to plants/gardens/trees? Contact me at signe@iastate.edu. You can also call your local extension office if you’d prefer to speak over the phone. Happy harvesting!
