Inauguration Day 2021
By: Lilliana O'Geen
April 30th, 1789 on the Federal Hall balcony, in New York City, New York, George Washington took the oath of office, becoming our nation's first president. Since then we have had 44 presidents, and over 230 years have passed since our first presidential inauguration. Our 46th president will be inaugurated on January 20th, but it wasn't always on this date.
In 1792, inauguration day was established on March 4th. It took so long to hold elections for offices such as vice president, senators, and representatives that the inauguration was held two months into George Washinton’s term. Since 1801 most presidential inaugurations have been held at the capitol building, but Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, and Gerald Ford were all sworn in at the White House. Inauguration day took place on March 4th for around 140 years. “So why was the date changed?” you might ask. Congress passed the 20th amendment in 1993. The amendment changed the date and time from March 4th to January 20th at noon. Perhaps Congress felt that it made more sense for the inauguration to take place at the beginning of the year. The 20th amendment also covered what would happen in the event that the president elected did not meet the requirements or died between election day and the inauguration. In this case, the vice president elected would take office.

How the World is Working Together to Stop the Pandemic
By: Cecilia O’Geen
I bet that almost all of us know someone with covid-19? I bet we know some one who even died from Covid-19. Every fifteen minutes someone dies from Covid-19 in Los Angeles. Every day millions get Covid-19 around the world. This brings stress. This stress can bring doubt of anything getting better. This leads to the question of, how can scientists come up with a vaccine in 10 months for the Corona virus that is 94.5% effective when scientists haven’t been able to find an effective vaccine for influenza in the 70 years that they have been studying it? Well, comparing these two viruses is like comparing an apple to an orange. These viruses are very different. The way the vaccine works is different, the way the world is working together is different too.
The flu and Covid-19 may sound similar but they are very different. Covid-19 has more strands than the flu. Sounds scary, right? Though it has more strands, Covid-19 has a slower mutation and less variability than the influenza virus. That is one way it makes it easier to make a vaccine for Covid-19.
Another reason that it is faster to make a vaccine for Covid-19 is that the world is in a STATE OF EMERGENCY! Solving this pandemic is a global effort. Governments, scientists, philanthropists, civil societies, global health organizations are all helping in many ways to quickly find a cure. Since Covid-19 is a pandemic, scientists are being allowed by the FDA(the food and drug administration) to skip some of the normal steps of getting the vaccine verified. This also makes it quicker to get a vaccine approved.
So, what have scientists come up with and does it work? Moderna and Pfizer companies have made vaccines that both rely on mRNA. mRNA is like the instruction manual to your lego set. In order to build the lego set right you have to follow the instructions. Well, the “lego set” or mRNA is building a spike protein. The Covid-19 vaccine gives instructions to your cells to make the spike proteins. Your immune system will make antibodies that stick onto the spike proteins. Your antibodies job is to fight off infection. Since the antibodies have the spike proteins they can prevent the virus from seriously infecting you.
Even though we have found the vaccine the global pandemic is not even close to over. But we are all in this together. All of our lives have changed. Many have lost their lives to Covid -19. So, how can we get through this global pandemic? With the help of people around the world working together we can find a cure.
