Message From Principal Engdall
Greeting Shaw Montessori,
Next week we will celebrate Staff Appreciation week at Shaw Montessori. The PTA has organized some amazing things to honor the work our teachers and all our support staff. Thank you advance for your kindness, love and generosity in recognizing the work they day every day with our children.
Need summer activities for the children? This summer our sister school Emerson Elementary will once again be offering some amazing summer opportunities for the students enrolled in our district schools. These summer camps will run June 6th to July 1st. Camps are designed for students in grades 1-8 for SY 22-23. Camp includes circus arts, gardening, media arts, design and illustration, STEM, and mural painting with a local artists and is presented at no cost to families. Emerson Elementary is located at 915 E. Palm Lane in Phoenix, 85006. Please see attached flyers for class descriptions and registration. They look like amazing opportunities.
Under the incredible guidance of Coach Wilfert the Shaw Soccer Stars are now 3-0! Soccer has a relatively short season this year but the team is making the most of it. See the soccer schedule below, hopefully you can join us for a game!
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall

Message From Laura Hildwein
Breaking up is hard to do.
Whether it is a breakup from a boyfriend/girlfriend or, a friend that you have had since kinder, the loss of a relationship will hit adolescents particularly hard. Most teens and tweens do not have the prior experience to know their feelings will pass. They do not see how things will get better. This is where they will need adult support.
- Be a good listener-listen and validate their feelings. Acknowledge that break-ups are painful
- Don’t downplay their feelings- Avoid statements such as “It isn’t a big deal”. If you minimize their grief your teen will likely not feel heard
- Don’t criticize the ex- they may get back together
- Do give hope for the future- Let them know that although break-ups are hard the feelings won’t last forever
- Talk about social media- Remind them not to post anything in anger that they may regret later. Also, help them cope if the ex is less respectful on social media and coach them on if/how to respond
- Encourage normal routines
- Seek help if needed- if feelings do not abate, if the teen shows signs of depression, sleep issues

Staff Appreciation Week
Staff Appreciation Week is Here!!
All week, our colorful bins belonging to our teams at SHAW will be outside of the office if you feel inclined to leave a little token of your appreciation for their hard work throughout the year. The cart of bins will be rolled out in the morning and brought in after school.
Attached is a spreadsheet of Shaw Staff and the team bins listed for your convenience.
If you are bringing chocolate/something temperature sensitive, be mindful of our hot temps and ring the doorbell to have it kept in the office until the staff member can pick it up. We do encourage staff to check their bins and empty them daily*
Thank you always for the generosity of our families during staff appreciation week- a homemade card or drawing from your child is a wonderful thing to receive.
Staff list is attached below

Garden Update
Greetings!
This past week has been filled with joy and excitement. We continued our pizza block and learned about the timeline of the pizza. The students used a number line to identify the different periods of the great ZA. Did you know that the first pizza was a margherita pizza named after the Italian queen of the late 19th century? Some students refused to eat their za with the basil and preferred the bland, cheese pizza. It takes years to build a sophisticated palate kiddos!
Our chicks are hatching like crazy. The sign-up sheet for chick purchase will be on the table outside of the front office on Monday the 2nd. Please fill it out with your name, # of chicks and phone number. CASH ONLY. No more than 2 chicks per family. We have 10 chicks available for sale this week. More will be available next week.
We will have a market table on Wednesday the 4th! Mrs. Hess’ class will be selling plants to help raise money for more science books in the library. There will be produce and flower bouquets available for purchase. All the funds will go to the library. Please bring cash. The table will be on Monroe St. from 1:30 until 2:15. See you all then!
The bottle cap drive is ongoing! Please bring your plastic bottle caps to school in a Ziplock bag and drop them off at the front table. Thank you for saving your caps.
We still need your Home Depot donations. Even $25.00 is a huge contribution. Here’s the link to Home Depot gift cards: https://www.homedepot.com/c/Gift_Cards

Shaw PTA
Hello Shaw Families!
Did you know May 2 through May 6 is Teacher Appreciation Week? It is, trust me! And here at Shaw, we're ready to appreciate our teachers, but we know how hard all of the Shaw staff work to make the school a safe and awe inspiring environment for our kids, so we celebrate all of them: teachers, admin, assistants, kitchen staff, and so on. It's Montessori, no one's left behind, and no one's forgotten, not even Bruno.
I bet you're wondering what this means for you. It's simple! This is your opportunity to thank teachers and staff in any way you choose! Write a letter, have your child draw a picture, give a gift or gift card, and so on. There are so many ways we can say Thank you, and we know Shaw parents are creative.
To make things easier for you, there will be teacher buckets in the lobby. Simply find the bucket that has your teacher’s name and drop off any drawings or offerings directly in the bucket. These will be in the lobby all week.
We're Grateful To Shaw Educators, and to show this, the PTA has organized daily treats and tokens for staff, using the following schedule:
Monday: Snacks for the Break Room
Tuesday: Plants and Flowers
Wednesday: Relaxation and Self-Care
Thursday: Beverages for the Break Room
Friday: Potluck
Feel free to supplement the PTA offerings by adding your own contribution!
Leigh Ann
