Don Benito Fundamental - Updates 02/22/2021
Message from the Principal
Dear Don Benito Families,
Greetings! Although we have only been in virtual learning this school year, there has been a strong sense of community present. I have witness this through many of our virtual events like the 100 Days of School video, PTA Restaurant Nights, the distribution of fifth grade t-shirts and the Read-A-Thon, just to mention a few. I want to thank our staff, families and community members for setting high standards in everything we do! Please take a moment to read the thank you note from the Annual Fund Board regarding the success of the Read-A-Thon (click the link below).
This week we have Spotlight Awards on Friday morning to recognize some Amazing Artists! Our goal is to provide an education that develops the whole child. We want our students to have diverse learning opportunities across the curriculum, so they can discover their talents and interests. Please join us for the assemblies with your children. The code is db21 on ChromeBooks or use this link.
A special thank you to PTA for using the Scholastic rewards money to buy a book for every child attending Don Benito! "Books for Bobcats" will be scheduled for pick up in the next few weeks. Teachers will share information on pick-up dates next week.
We are collecting library books that students checked out during the 2019-20 school year. Mrs. Shurney is placing a secure collection box by the lunch distribution area off of Valley View Ave. Please drop off books between 8:30 am -12:00pm. Mrs. Shurney will scan the books back into the system. I will have her run a report of all outstanding library books, so we can be ready to use the library in the future.
As Dr. McDonald stated last week, the declined of COVID-19 cases is a positive sign in reopening schools, however many factors are being considered by our district leaders, and there is no set reopening date at this time. Principals are working on their site plans and incorporating updates provided from the Pasadena Health Department on February 11. I am attaching the document for your reference. My goal is to lead with transparency.
Schools and School-Based Programs K-12 - Public Health Reopening Protocol Rev. 02/11/2021
The week of March 1-5, we are celebrating Read Across America. The theme this year is promoting diversity. Some activities will include having guest readers in the classrooms on March 5, PTA sponsored story time in the afternoons or early evenings, spirit week, and much more. As we celebrate reading, I share the words of NEA that part of developing a lifelong love of reading is also giving children books with characters who represent them and who have different experiences from them. In our diverse and complex society, students need books that provide both windows and mirrors if we are going to create more readers, writers, and people who feel included and recognized, and who understand that the world is far richer than just their experiences alone.
Let's celebrate our diverse community at Don Benito while we read!
Respectfully,
Dr. Bugarin
