Mustangs in the Middle: 9-20-19
Start With Hello Week
Next week (9/23-9/27), Strongsville Middle School (along with the entire Strongsville City School District) is joining hundreds of other schools from across the United States in participating in Start With Hello Week. Social isolation is an overwhelming feeling of being left out, lonely, or treated like you are invisible. Start With Hello Week brings attention to the growing epidemic of social isolation and empowers young people to create a culture of inclusion and connectedness within their school.
Throughout the week, students and staff are encouraged to participate in the following dress up days to raise awareness of the week:
Monday (9/23) - “Brighten Someone’s Day with Kindness” (Wear Neon)
Tuesday (9/24) - “Be Cozy with Kindness” (Wear Hoodies/Sweats)
Wednesday (9/25) - Wear Strongsville Gear/Green to support Sandy Hook Promise
Thursday (9/26) - “Walk in Someone Else’s Shoes!” (Wear crazy socks/shoes)
Friday (9/27) - “Be Your Best at SMS” (Picture Day Attire)
Along with the dress up days and other daily activities, students are also encouraged to participate in the Mustang PRIDE Team Competition. Students can earn points for the team in two different ways:
1. Bringing in items for the Student Council Food Drive (which will take place all week)
6th Grade - Toilet Paper (Each roll = 1 point)
7th Grade - Canned Veggies (Each can = 1 point)
8th Grade - Canned Soups (Each can = 1 point)
2. Earning Paper Handprints - Teachers/Staff will be on the lookout for inclusive behaviors. Students who are caught being inclusive will be given a paper handprint to write their name and team on to hang up in the cafeteria. Students can turn in their paper hands for a “Hello Point” for their team, a small prize, and be entered into a raffle. The grade level team with the most points at the end of the week wins the PRIDE trophy for their grade and the overall team for the school wins a donut party!
Additionally, knowing that a partnership between our schools and community is critical in creating a culture of inclusion, we encourage you to post #hellostrongsville on your own social media and talk with your child about the activities taking place here at school next week.
Together, we can make a difference!
