6th Grade Math/Matemáticas de 6º Grado
6th graders have been working hard and just wrapped up our 5th unit of the year. They are now experts on dividing fractions using diagrams as well as the standard algorithm. This unit was a tough one and required perseverance and deep thinking but 6th grade mathematicians rose to the occasion. Now we will be working on arithmetic in base ten. This includes adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals. Speaking of decimals, we will celebrate one of the most famous decimals very soon on Pi day! We celebrate Pi on March 14th because 3.14 are the first 3 digits of Pi. Students can begin memorizing as many digits of Pi as possible now if they want to enter the memorization contest on Pi Day.
Our 7th graders are working on proportions, finding unit rate, discounts, tip and taxes. They have broadened their understanding and ability to use the formula for proportionality by applying it to problems related to finding discounts, tip, taxes and commissions. Currently students are completing their Paisan’s project where they use a real menu to select a variety of foods and then calculate the tax and tip for their order. This is a great opportunity for students to make the connection between classroom learning and real-world application. We also discovered how proportions can affect our daily lives when we worked on converting recipes and looking at unit price and finding what would be the best deal. The students enjoyed these activities and really saw the relevance of learning the material. We are also working on using more precise language when stating steps for solving a problem and/or summarizing how we, ourselves, solved the problem. We are making a more conscious effort at using action words to enhance comprehension. Our next unit focuses on Irrational Numbers and students will be able to discover how understanding positive/negative numbers impacts our daily lives.
8th grade mathematicians just wrapped up their unit on Pythagorean theorem. We worked on how to use the theorem to prove whether a triangle has a right angle, and also to find missing measurements in situations where we know that two sides form a right angle. Overall students did great with this brand new (to them) concept! Next up we will be studying functions. Specifically, looking at how graphs of functions tell a story and how we can analyze graphs and tables of real world data to learn more about different situations. We will also be working with the formulas for Volume of various 3D figures and how to apply those formulas to real-world problems.
