Mrs. Turley's Tidbits
Week of 1/9 - 1/12/17
What's Cooking in Room 1?
Fundations:
We began Week 3 of Unit 7 this week. We were introduced to three new suffixes - -y, -ly, and -ty. We discussed how the suffix changes the base word. It was pointed out, for example, that the suffix -y can be used to change words into adjectives - grump to grumpy, chill to chilly.
Literacy:
This week we continued working on our comprehension, fluency, and responding in writing to our reading. We enjoyed another wonderful book, Yummers Too! and hope you did too when the students brought it home to share with you. We had our Aimsweb Testing this week to assess our fluency and our class members did an excellent job! Bravo to our roaring readers of Room 1! We are also being assessed for Fountas and Pinnell reading levels. It's a timely process but it provides excellent information about the students' reading performance. It is my hope that I will have met with all the students in this one-to-one situation by the end of next week.
Math:
We began to work on the math concepts embedded in Unit 3 which covers Multi-Digit Addition and Subtraction. We spent this week working on our "friends of ten" approach to math equations. We used math master, Greg Tang, as our guide and learned his strategy for solving addition equations. Be sure to visit www.gregtang.com for more resources and games to build math skills.
Writing Workshop:
Lots of great writing has been going on this week in our room as we prepared for our "on-demand" writing piece for assessment. We have a roomful of experts on many different topics and they're doing a great job of putting their knowledge in print. We can't wait to share!
Junior Achievement:
We had our fourth lesson this week with Mr. Tony. We learned about a "decision tree" to help us make good decisions by thinking, discussing, and then writing out our "pros" and "cons". We also had an opportunity to experience voting and got "I Voted!" stickers for our hard work.
This week's Star of the Week...Kevin Hebreard!
Maria and Murtuza (our M & M's) were first to turn in their January Book Reports. Perfectly done too!
