Family Engagement Coordinator
Thank you to Amber Ortiz who has stepped into a new role as Family Engagement Coordinator! She is there to support families with the many challenges that come with homeschooling. She can provide help or resources with many things ranging from teaching math to providing support to students with speech challenges. She is working on providing family friendly resources that will support students and their overall experience.
Amber can be found in the library Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-1.
Weekly Contact During the Holiday Season
Just a reminder that the state requires us to make weekly contact with all of our students every week we are in session, even if it is a partial week, and even if the student is sick or out-of-town.
This can be particularly challenging during the holiday months.
We appreciate your partnership in fulfilling this requirement; we know sometimes it is a bother!
Please help us stay in compliance by connecting with your WSLP Consultant Teacher if you will not be in attendance for a week. And remember to pick up that phone when you see it’s us calling! : )
First Bring Your Parent to School Day Event
A huge thank you to everyone who attended and participated in our first Bring Your Parent to School Day Event this past month!
We had a packed gym for the Reptile Man’s presentation, we met a bunch of parents and grandparents, and we ate a ton of hot dogs and ice cream!
For our NEXT Bring Your Parent to School Day Event in March, we will be adding a drawing for a fancy date night dinner out for a lucky family member, hopefully more student activities, and an assembly/event for ALL ages, teens included.
***Remember - EVERY day at Sky Valley is bring your parents to school day, K-12! We want to meet you, we want to talk to you, we want to work with you; it’s why we are here!***

Here’s what’s been happening:
Academics: Senior meetings to discuss credits earned and what’s next; individual credit check meetings available by appointment for all high school students, and college application support
Social/Emotional: Classroom presentations to promote well-being of all SVEC students; Edge Coaching to support students in building executive functioning skills and mindsets.
Career: Presentation to Writing Skills for High School and Beyond class to introduce a new Career Planning tool: Xello; Sno-Isle Tech Center presentation to encourage students to apply now for next year.
What’s next?:
Academics: Be sure to check out all the labs to support academic success; many Sno-Isle programs are still accepting applications for next year from current 10th and 11th graders: Sno-Isle TECH. Be sure to make an appointment with JeNell if you have questions about high school credits or pathways to graduation.
Social/Emotional: BRANCH OUT!-- Students 8th grade and above get to know one another better, learn to appreciate a variety of perspectives, and encourage each other. We meet on Fridays at noon in room 13 and we’d welcome new students. You may bring your lunch!
Career: Introducing Xello! By the end of December, Xello will replace Career Cruising as SVEC’s internet based career exploration and planning tool for students in grades 6-12. Students access XELLO using their Skyward/Canvas login information.
For more information about any counseling activities, please reach out to the main office or JeNell.
THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP - Highlighting Parent Success Stories
Q&A session with another loving SVEC parent
Why do you feel partnering with them right now is important?Partnering with them right now seems more critical than it did when we first started school. We've been homeschooling from the start as they both have some social issues and adhd/add and knew that public school was not going to be an effective learning environment for them to be successful.
They are both highly intelligent and motivated and we 'know' the best ways they learn and can help them navigate those learning styles and adapt when necessary. As they are growing and finding that their "peculiar" social behaviors aren't the norm, we are there to offer guidance and they are in a time of their lives where peer relationships become more important and being able to help them navigate those scenarios gives them confidence and with that, also helps them stay on target with their educational goals.
What has worked for you? In other words, what are some helpful tools or advice you could give to other parents who are also working with this age group? Trusting that our kids know where their limits are, whether it's socially, physically or educationally and allowing them to push themselves or pull back. Whatever feels the most comfortable to them. They both have some physical things that have limited them in the past and are both trying very hard to push past their weaknesses. It can be hard watching them struggle but allowing them to work through the adversity and teaching them to know when it's a good time to take a break, has been a key element in their emotional growth. If they were away from us for 6-8 hours a day, we probably wouldn't know them quite as well as we do now.
I'm very grateful for the opportunity to be with them everyday and know that I'm in a privileged position that allows me to do so.Sky Valley Education Center
