Term 3 Week 10 Newsletter
30th September 2022
Principal's Message
Kia ora koutou katoa,
Term 3 has been full of valuable learning at West End School. We have enjoyed our continued emphasis on our values based learning throughout the term. We have also been thrilled with the progress and growth we have seen from our children. There has been plenty of whakamana shown by all of Te Kura O Urumutu over the past ten weeks and I’m pleased to see children enjoying individual moments of success as a result.
Recently it has been great to see our children participating in a number of sporting opportunities, experiencing Arts learning at West End School, ongoing development of our Environment Club, physics learning with Dr. A, further strengthening of our Te Matauranga Māori Learning at West End School including a fantastic Te wiki o Te Reo Māori, ongoing maths and literacy learning, and of course our Woodwork Learning.
As the term comes to a close it is also a great time to acknowledge the effort everyone has invested over the last ten weeks. In particular, I would like to thank our talented and committed staff who have continued to provide exciting, personalised and meaningful learning for our West End School tamariki. Over the break there will be continued property work being carried out at school including finishing touches to our Administration Block refurbishment (watch this space), builders working on the Special Needs Swimming Pool Changing Rooms, all carpets cleaned throughout the school, and ongoing work to the grounds to make sure things are looking great for the start of Term 3.
I would also like to thank families and whanau for your ongoing support of your child(rens) learning and for our kura.
Have a safe and happy holiday.
Ngā mihi nui

SUNHATS AND TOGS FOR TERM 4
Next term is a summer term again! Take time over the holidays to dig out that school hat and get it ready for next term. The school supplies sunscreen stations, please ensure that if your child is allergic to the sunscreen we use that you let their classroom teacher know. If you wish to send your child in with sunscreen, you are more than welcome and this can be left in their bag. Swimming will also be starting next term, so can you also please make sure your child's tog's fit them properly and come on their swimming day with a towel and goggles.
Swimming starts in Week 1, Term 4
Swimming starts on the first Monday of Term 4. Swimming for ORS students will begin in Week 4 or 5 (more details to follow). A school apps message will be coming out the Sunday before school starts to remind whānau that classes are swimming that week. Please ensure your children have togs that fit, have a towel and goggles.

The Senior Classes Gala Day
Thank you to everyone who came and supported our Te Wao Nui O Tāne Lunchtime Gala! It was lovely to see whānau supporting our senior students in their enterprises, and helping our smallest tamariki to navigate money and direction, whilst they hunted for their favourite purchase.
We could feel the manaakitanga as everyone came together; the laughter, bartering and smiley, happy faces was all worth the hard work from children and adults alike.
A little background: The gala came about from the school values and students learning. This term they have engaged in a technology unit, using a design cycle. They've worked in groups, came up with a want or need, made their first designs, tested them/surveyed potential consumers, improved or narrowed designs, made product, tested product on potential consumers, gave their product a name and a logo, marketed product (advertising) and then sold their product at the gala. It was a lot of work, but also a lot of fun.
The Te Wao Nui O Tāne Lunchtime Gala raised approximately $3000. This money will go into The Camp Pot. The Camp Pot is money that can be used for a number of things specifically around camp e.g.
1. To help those children get to camp who may not be able to afford the full donation.
2. To purchase any gear needed for camp that is necessary for a child, that we can't source in other ways.
3. To finance any unforeseen extras.
Thank you again for supporting our gala and contributing to the camp efforts. We all had a fabulous time and we are very appreciative of our wonderful school community.
