Mrs. Birkland's Kindergarten Class

Room 108

We are back! This week we began to learn about the long vowel sounds. This week we focused on the sound for Long A, like Cake on a Plate. We learned the three most common ways to make the long Aa sound, a_e (a_ bossy e), ai_, and _ay. We are just exposing them to the ways for writing purposes. Now when they ask how do you spell "way", I could say, what sound do you hear at the beginning? /w/. then what do you hear at the end? /long a/. It is the 3rd choice for long A. They would look at the chart and know it was ay! As for identifying the sounds, this quarter, they only need to know that a can make 2 sounds. short a /a/ like in cat. and long a like in ape or cake.

Reader's Workshop

In Reader's Workshop, we have been working on identifying the main characters in a story. We read many fun books like David Goes to School, Skippyjon Jones, and Officer Buckle and Gloria. We are working to identity characters and setting as well as main details and to be able to retell the story in our own words. See if your child can tell you what happened in one of our three books. Which one was their favorite? Why?

Writer's Workshop-Small Moments

This quarter's writing objective is to be able to tell about a small moment or several connected events and provide a reaction to what happened. We worked this week to retell three things we did over our winter break and tell how it made us feel. This was quite the task. We used a graphic organizer to help us trap our ideas before we forgot what we wanted to write about. That way, when we went to write each day, we already knew what are idea was to write about. As we write, we are continuing to focus to write sentences with a capital letter and other letters lowercase, put spaces in between, and punctuation at the end. What a task!

In Math we began to study subtraction. We read Pete the Cat and His 4 Groovey Buttons. In the story Pete keeps losing one button after another! He gets less and less each time. Subtraction! We practiced the concept of taking away his buttons and then writing the subtraction sentence to match. We also practiced taking away through eating several of our snacks this week. :) Subtraction is awfully yummy!

Fun Friday

We had a great time on Friday doing all sorts of things. We worked on our small moments pieces, sounded out words in a puzzle, made some awesome snowflakes, went on a subtraction hunt and had a "snowball fight" with a partner. See the pictures below for some of the fun we had.

Grade Cards Go Home Next Week

Our 2nd quarter ended in December. We are now into our 3rd quarter. Your child's grade card will be coming home on Friday, December 15th. It will also include a sheet explaining again what was assessed during the quarter.

I sent home a yellow page with our 3rd quarter objectives. You can slide it into one of the sleeves in side of your child's folder as a safe place.

Hey! If you have not gotten onto Seesaw yet, you can download it on your child's iPad. Just go to the iPad store and download Seesaw Parent. That way you can see and comment on their progress throughout this next quarter.

Three Minutes of your time could help me a lot!

You would not believe the amount of shoes I tie everyday. There are many shoes that come untied over and over again throughout the day, including my own daughter's, who is in 2nd grade. Well, I watched the video below and learned a way to tie shoes to where they won't come untied. I have been tying shoes all week like this and it works! Please check out the video below. If you all could tie their shoes like this each morning, I might never have to tie another shoe again. Well, at least cut down by a lot. :)

I wonder (things to ask your child at home)

  • Who was the Main Character in the Book David Goes to School? What was the story about?
  • Can you count back from 10?
  • What did you do for fun Friday?

Snack and Share

Our snack and share students next week are:

*Please remember that we are a peanut free classroom. Check out the peanut free snack list for acceptable snacks.

Just a Few Reminders

  • As it is starting to get chilly outside, please dress your child in layers (jacket, short sleeves, etc.) Our rooms are warm and I don't want your child to be too hot inside and cold outside! DON'T FORGET A JACKET/COAT!
  • Please go through your child's backpack every evening to see their accomplishments and charge their iPad!
