SUMMER SCHOOL 2021
Summer Credit Recovery is On at ORHS!
Summer School 2021 Sign Up Form
After a challenging school year, many of our students have gotten behind in their classes and credits. In order to stay on track for graduation and fill in learning gaps, students will need to complete summer credit recovery. Students have four years plus a summer to graduate high school so it is important that they earn their credits each year to stay on track. We are excited to offer an expanded summer school this year to accommodate every student who may need to recover credit(s). While some courses are available with a teacher/classroom format, the majority of our credit recovery offerings will be online courses with in-person teacher support. Daily attendance is required for summer school.
Summer Credit Recovery will be offered at NO COST this year, and, for the first time ever, we are excited to be able to offer transportation for our summer recovery students. We will also provide lunch.
Dates: Monday, June 7 through Thursday, July 1st
Times: 7:45 to 10:45 (AM Session)
11:15 to 2:00 (PM Session)
Students must attend summer school in person. There is no virtual option for summer credit recovery. Summer school is self-paced, so they may finish before the final day. We will offer online credit recovery for the majority of our courses, but we have a face to face option for Geometry as well as Algebra 2. Students may sign up for two courses for summer recovery, but may seek admin approval to take a third course if necessary.
Students who are attending summer school will keep their laptops at the end of the school year. They will turn in their devices when they complete their summer school course(s).
Students must have earned a 50% or better in a course to be eligible for summer credit recovery. If a student has not earned a 50%, they must repeat the entire course in summer or the following school year.
If you have questions about your child’s eligibility for summer school, please reach out to his/her teachers, school counselors, or grade level administrators.
The deadline to sign up for summer school is May 26th.
STUDENTS - GET YOUR COVID VACCINE HERE!
COVID-19 VACCINES
Parents,
The Anderson County Health Department and the Oak Ridge Schools have partnered to provide the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for those 16 years old and older on Friday, June 4 and Friday June 25.
The Pfizer vaccine is a two-dose series and is approved for ages 16 and older. Two weeks after receiving the second dose, persons are considered fully vaccinated. Being fully vaccinated reduces the risk of disease, hospitalization, and death. Being vaccinated also protects friends, family, and the community. Once fully vaccinated, you do not have to quarantine if exposed to COVID-19. It is important for those 16 and older to be vaccinated to help prevent the spread of the virus in schools, sports, and other extracurricular activities. Wearing masks, social distancing, and washing hands help reduce the spread, of COVID-19. Getting a COVID-19 vaccine is the single most effective tool, to prevent the spread of disease.
Common side effects from the vaccine include pain at the injection site, headache, muscle, or joint pain, fever, and chills. These side effects typically resolve within 12-24 hours. Please review the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for specific vaccine information
Please take the following steps if you would like your child to participate in this COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic.

ROTC ANNUAL AWARDS CEREMONY
The Oak Ridge HS NJROTC unit held its annual awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 19, 2021. Kicking the evening off was Mr. Gene Sievers from Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC at Y-12, presented a check for $10,000 to the Oak Ridge NJROTC program. Throughout the ceremony, many cadets were recognized for their exceptional leadership and academic performance from various national and local veteran-based organizations, such as the AMVETs, VFW, American Legion, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Navy League, to name a few of the 17 presenters.
“This evening’s ceremony is extra special”, says Chief Nicholls. “14 of the Wildcat Company’s graduating seniors started this program in 2017, the Navy calls them ‘Plank Owners’. To be a Plank Owner in the Navy is an enormous honor and celebrated title. Seeing the personal and professional growth these Cadets have made and the legacy they have built the Oak Ridge NJROTC program into is astonishing. I am so very proud of each of them and will truly miss them,” states Chief Nicholls. As each ‘Plank Owner’ departed the stage, the ship’s bell was tolled twice and they were announced “Plank Owner, departing”.
There were a few extra special awards presented during the ceremony, Cadet Ryan Register received the “Rhiannon Lucas Leadership Award” for his exceptional performance of duties as the Cadet Commanding Officer for two years. Rhiannon Lucas was the company’s first Commanding Officer and established the program from the ground up with exceptional professionalism. Cadet Elizabeth Brands received the “Brian Robertson Inspiration Award” for being a cadet that truly inspires those around her to be great. Cadet Sasha Umansky was recognized as the Cadet of the Year and was meritoriously promoted to Cadet Ensign.
This year’s ceremony concluded with a Change-of-Command ceremony. Cadet Lieutenant Commander Ryan Register relinquished command as the Wildcat Company Commanding Officer to Cadet Ensign Sasha Umansky. Cadet Umansky will carry the Unit into the future and continue to drive in personal and professional growth to all cadets within the organization.

TRACK SECTIONAL RESULTS
On Saturday, May 15th, the Oak Ridge High School track team competed in the Section 1 Track and Field Championships in Johnson City. Section 1 consists of schools from Knoxville and the Tri-Cities combined. This was a very competitive meet with lots of fast times. This meet determines which athletes will go to the Tennessee State Championship on May 27th.
State qualifiers were:
Trent Howe - 4th place - Discus (150' 8") - Head Coach Tom Sauer said, "Trent fouled on his first 2 throws and only had 1 throw left to make finals. It was pretty scary until he was able to get a good throw on his 3rd attempt. In the finals, he was able to throw his best throw of the day."
4 x 800 meter relay team - 3rd place (8:00) - relay members:
Manny Cruz - 2:03 split, Eli Cox - 1:57 split, Eddie Moore - 2:03 split, Adam Herron - 1:56 split
This relay ran 8:09 about 3 weeks ago, but haven't run it as a group since then. Manny Cruz got us off to a good start. Eli Cox ran a 4 second pr(personal record) to put us in 3rd. Eddie Moore did a good job of keeping us in position and Adam Herron ran a pr to put us in position to run 8:00. This group has just been getting better as the season has gone on and it has been fun to watch.
Jacob Berven - 4th place - 100 meters (11.04) - Jacob really put it out there to qualify. The scary thing is that he knows he can run faster! He is looking to go under 11 at the state meet and put himself in position for an all-state finish (top 8).
Eli Cox - 4th place - 1600 meters (4:22) - What else is there to say except wow! This was an 8 second pr! Eli ran a great race. With 200 meters to go, he was in 5th and looked like he wasn't going to qualify. With 150 to go, he started moving and all of sudden looked like it could happen. He made the pass with about 80 meters to go and kept it going to the finish to punch his ticket to state. That's the fastest time by an Oak Ridger in the 1600 since 2015. This season has been a great finish to his career before he moves on to Tennessee Wesleyan next year.
Adam Herron - 3rd place - 800 meters (1:58) - Adam has been a great surprise. This is his first full year of track. Other than getting boxed in at the start and getting out too slow, he made up for it over the last 600 meters. He got himself into 3rd place and was able to stay there for his spot to state.
Other athletes that competed and their finishes:
Olivia Land - 5th place - high jump (5'0"), Sophia Hughes - 15th place - shot put (30"6") and 22nd place - discus (86'6"), Amelia Van Berkel - 15th place - discus (91'4"), Imelia Markus-Brock - 11th place - long jump (15'0")
4x200 meter relay (Maya Wilson/Seven Pettus/Imelia Markus-Brock/Emily Lindsey)- 11th place (1:50.73)
Vivianne Long - 28th place - 1600 meters (6:05)
Thora Spence - 32nd place - 1600 meters (6:12) and 16th place - 400 meters (1:05)
Maggie Froning - 10th place - 800 meters (2:29)
Emily Lindsey - 9th place - 200 meters (26.83) and 12th place - 100 meters (13.28)
Seven Pettus - 16th place - 100 meters (13.35)
Dawson Hughes - 11th place - discus (122'11")
Jeremiah Holman - 25th place - long jump (17'6.5")
Alex Waraksa - 13th place - high jump (5'8")
4x400 meter relay (Cole Adams/Jacob Berven/Eli Cox/Adam Herron) - 7th place (3:33)
4x200 meter relay (Cole Adams/Cam Barnette/Jayden Williams/Jacob Berven) - 7th place (1:32.48)
4x100 meter relay (Ryan Kiger/Cam Barnette/Trey Branson/Jayden Williams) - 9th place (45.07)
Jack Biewer - 10th place - 3200 meters (10:13), Parker Bell - 35th place - 1600 meters (4:56)
Eddie Moore - 10th place - 800 meters (2:04), Jacob Berven - 9th place - 200 meters (23.17)
Jayden Williams - 10th place - 200 meters (23.21)
