True Love Never Runs Smooth

Lysander's Mix Tape

Theme: True Love will always face problems.

In the play A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare, there are many characters that are deeply in love. At the start, Theseus and Hippolyta are in love, and Lysander and Hermia are in love. Helena loves Demetrius, but sadly at the start of the play, Demetrius does not love Helena back. If they lived in a perfect world, Theseus and Hippolyta would get married, Lysander would marry Hermia, and Demetrius would realize he actually does love Helena and they would get married to. But there are several problems with the ideal situation above. Hermia is in love with Lysander, but her father wants her to marry Demetrius. Lysander himself falls in love with Helena in the middle of the play, and then everything starts becoming chaotic. Nobody loves Hermia anymore, and then everybody starts to love Helena all of the sudden. Throughout the play, many of the characters continue to face problems with love.
Madonna - Forbidden Love

Track One: "Forbidden Love" by Maddona

I think that Lysander would of listened to this song at around the beginning of the play. I think he would of listened to this song because it is about his love life with Helena. At the time in the play when he is listening to this play, he and Helena are both in love. There is one problem though, Helena's father, Egeus, does not approve of them loving each other because he wants to decide who Helena marries.
Evanescence - Anywhere

Track Two: "Anywhere" by Evanescence

Lysander would listen to this song after he decides to run away with Hermia. This song seems to really fit Lysander's attitude at this time; especially a verse that has these lyrics: We're leaving here tonight

There's no need to tell anyone

They'd only hold us down

So by the morning light

We'll be halfway to anywhere

Where love is more than just your name.

This verse really describes his feelings when he decided to run away with with Hermia, and go through a forest in the middle of the night in order to reach a relatives house where he could be with Hermia. Lysander is now feeling more confident that their forbidden love may actually work out.

Alanis Morissette- Hand in my pocket/ w lyrics

Track Three: "Hand In My Pocket" by Alanis Morissette

Lysander would listen to this song while he is in the forest with Hermia, after they sneaked out and started to run away. This song is about how a guy is not in the best situation at the moment, but he still feels like the happiest person in the world. At this time in the play, Lysander and Hermia are tired, dirty, hungry, exhausted, and in the middle of the forest while it is dark outside. But they are very happy even though they are in a uncomfortable situation. They are happy because they were able to sneak away with out any major problems yet, and they were finally able to be together.
Drake- Doing It Wrong (LYRICS)

Track Four: "Doing It Wrong" by Drake

I believe that Lysander would listen to this song after he woke up and immediately fell in love with Helena because of the love potion thing that Robin Goodfellow put in his eyes. The love potion that Robin Goodfellow put in Lysander's eyes, caused Lysander to fall in love with the first person he saw, even if he already loved another person. This caused Lysander to stop loving Hermia, and fall deeply in love with Helena, because Helena was the first person she saw. Lysander is caused to feel like he has been loving the wrong person his whole life, and he actually is in love with Helena. Lysander would have directed this song to Helena. This scene proves that true love does not always remain true. One particular verse would mean a lot to Lysander:

So cry if you need to, but I can't stay to watch you

That's the wrong thing to do
Touch if you need to, but I can't stay to hold you
That's the wrong thing to do
Talk if you need to, but I can't stay to hear you
That's the wrong thing to do
Cause you'll say you love me, and I'll end up lying

And say I love you too

In this verse, one person is talking to another person saying that they don't belong together, and he is going to leave, no matter what the other person (she) does.

Bruno Mars - When I Was Your Man [Official Video]

Track Five: "When I Was Your Man" by Bruno Mars

Lysander would of listened to this song when he needed to compete with Demetrius for Helena's love. Lysander would direct this song to himself, to express his sorrow that Helena does not love him. There is one special part of When I Was Your Man that expresses Lysander's feelings really well when he realizes that he and Demetrius are both in love with Helena. This is the verse:

It all just sounds like oooooh…
Mmm, too young, too dumb to realize
That I should've bought you flowers
And held your hand
Should've gave you all my hours
When I had the chance
Take you to every party
'Cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby's dancing
But she's dancing with another man

Lysander is trying to express that he should told Helena that he loved her when he had the chance. Now he thinks it is too late and he has to compete with Demetrius. Lysander is starting to realize that love is something that does not always run smooth.

Ne-Yo - Mad

Track Six: "Mad" by Ne-Yo

Lysander would listen to this song right after he and Demetrius start arguing over Helena, and get into a fight. The whole song is not completely about Lysander's feelings at that time, but more about him being mad at another person because of love. I believe he would listen to this song, kind of as a way of talking to himself about how mad he is. He now also at this point have to convince everybody else that his relationship with Hermia was not true love, but it was a mistake and he realized his actual true love is Helena.
Gucci Mane - Confused (Feat. Future)

Track Seven: "Confused" by Gucci Mane (Feat. Future)

Lysander would have listened to this song while he is trying to find Demetrius to find him. Robin Goodfellow was actually pretending to be Demetrius and call Lysander's name, in order to confuse Lysander and Demetrius, and tire them out. At this point in the play, Lysander feels really confused and tired because he can't find Demetrius anywhere. I think that Lysander would listen to this song to help him express his feelings. He wouldn't really direct this song to anybody in particular. Lysander is probably having seconds thought about having Helena as his true love.
Taylor Swift - 22

Track Eight: "22" by Taylor Swift

Lysander would have listened to this song after Robin Goodfellow took away the affect of all the love potion that he had put on Lysander (by accident), and and he and Demetrius both loved their true loves now. But at that time they were both confused about how they got where they were, because Robin Goodfellow made the group of friends forget the events following up to that point. Lysander is happy that he is still with his true love, but as I said before, he is also confused how he came into the middle of a forest with his friends. This part of the song sounds like something he could of been saying to Hermia:

We're happy, free, confused, and lonely at the same time

It's miserable and magical.

Veronica Petrucci "Expecting Great Things" feat. John P Kee @VeronicaP

Track Nine: "Expecting Great Things" by Veronica Petrucci feat. John P Kee

Lysander would listen to this song while Egeus and Theseus debate over what to do with Lysander and his friends, when they discover that they ran away. Lysander isn't exactly expecting great things at this moment, but he is really anxious trying to anticipate what Egeus' decision will be. He would direct the sentiments of this song to Hermia, Helena, and Demetrius. All of them are wondering whether or not they will be allowed to marry their true love.
Pharrell Williams - Happy (Despicable Me 2 - Lyric Video)

Track Ten: "Happy (Despicable Me 2)" by Pharrell Williams

Lysander would listen to this song after Hemia's dad, Egeus, approved of Him and Hermia marrying each other. Lysander feels like the happiest person in the world at that time, so obviously, he would listen to a song called Happy. He would direct the sentiments of this song to the whole entire world to express his happiness. I think that he would have listened to the following verse over and over again:

Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like that's what you wanna do

Lysander is finally able to marry his true love, Hermia. Over the course of the play, Lysander discovered how confusing love can be.
