Tall Tales in Texas
Presented by Bullock Texas State History Museum

What makes a story a tall tale? What are the characteristics of that genre? A Museum Educator will lead a discussion about the literary elements of a Tall Tale. The book, Pecos Bill Invents the Ten-Gallon Hat, will be read aloud with an opportunity for discussion afterwards. During the discussion, evaluate the Tall Tale genre and determine whether this story fits the criteria.
No supplies needed, but here are some extension activities.
Career Chat: Coastal Fisheries Ecosystem Resource Protection Biologist

They will discuss what their jobs entail, share the stories of what led them to pursue a career in Natural Resources, and give a few tips on how you can prepare to enter the Fish and Wildlife industry.

Put on your wet suits and dip into the ocean's zones! From the epipelagic to the deep abyss, we'll learn all about the layers of the ocean and the creatures that live in each environment.
RECORDING - Can't join us live? No problem! You will be sent a link to access the recording within 1-3 business days after the live program. The recording can be viewed anytime at your convenience with the registered class.
Arbor Day: A Celebration of Trees (Recording Only)
Presented by Old Jail Art Center
Grades 3-6
Did you know that trees have their own national holiday? Explore the history and traditions of Arbor Day and view In The Spring by artist Grant Wood. This is an excellent opportunity to utilize Visual Thinking Strategies in the classroom while exploring social study topics such as Recycling and Reforestation. Students will enjoy a reading of The Giving Tree, by Shel Silverstein. Students will create a multimedia tree sculpture using recycled and recyclable materials.

Hanami: A Japanese Celebration of Spring (Recording Only)
Presented by Old Jail Art Center
Grades K-6
Students will enjoy a lesson and coordinating activity focused on cross-cultural spring traditions and symbols. Explores the brief annual phenomenon of Sakura blossoms across the Japanese coast and subsequent celebrations. Includes traditional Japanese Children’s Song and book recommendations. Poetry and American Art (Recording) Grades 7-8
Identify elements of figurative language and flex creative writing muscles while reading and establishing connections between classic poems and American art. Select poems will be delivered to educators upon registration.

During the COVID-19 stay-at-home order, the Texas State Aquarium can still deliver LIVE distance learning programs. Please contact aquavision@txstateaq.org to request any of its programs that will enhance your online lessons and benefit your students' learning at home.
