January 23, 2023
Dear GHS Family,
Our quote of the week comes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr:
“Set out to do well.”
I’m encouraged and thankful for Dr. King's reminder that whatever I set out to do, I need to set out well. We all have tasks and responsibilities as educators, students and families. Some of those tasks and responsibilities are mundane, so it is a struggle to get started. Setting out to do well impacts our attitude, which impacts how a task or responsibility is accomplished. At times, it is daunting to consider that every decision made and action completed impacts what comes next. If I set out to do well, then it impacts the outcome in a positive way. Setting out well is a choice. Let’s start this week well as we continue our journey of being Future Strong.

GHS Cellphone Policy
Beginning February 1st
GHS staff will begin enforcing the current GVC4 Cell Phone Policy:
Cell phones may be used before school, after school, during passing periods, at lunch, and in class ONLY for instructional purposes with teacher permission.
(This policy is outlined in detail on pages 26 & 52 in the Student Parent Handbook.)
Adherence to this policy is MISSION driven. We are seeking to truly provide our students with a supportive learning environment by decreasing distractions and increasing our focus on providing challenging and engaging learning experiences. This change will also provide our students with the opportunity to practice important Life Skills as they adapt to the policy.
Parents: We ask for your support in this endeavor. Please, talk with your students about the importance of focusing on their education during school hours. Also, remember that the best way to contact your student in the case of an emergency is to call the school office @ 816-316-5800.
GHS Attendance Policy
5 absences = No Credit
Find the GVC4 Board of Education Attendance Policy on page 10 of the Student Parent Handbook.
The board policy requires students to make up missed attendance hours after 4 absences. Otherwise, students may have their grades adjusted to "NC" for "no credit" on their transcripts, even if they received a passing score in the class.
We are gradually moving back to monitoring and enforcing this policy after COVID.
If students in attendance violation for first semester DID NOT submit an appeal, they will have their grades in those specific classes adjusted to "NC."
If students in attendance violation for first semester DID submit an appeal, they will have their "NC" waived and receive credit for passing grades.
Need to submit and appeal?
The appeal form will be open from 1/24-1/31 for one last opportunity:
