SCHLEGEL SAFARI
APRIL 2019
A letter from your Principals!
Hello Schlegel Families!
Happy Spring! The signs of spring are all around us at Schlegel. Students and staff are busy spring learning and cleaning all around the school. Spring break will be here before we know it. Hopefully everyone enjoys the break and has many opportunities to play outside.
A TREND WE WANT PARENTS TO KNOW ABOUT is around technology. Unfortunately, we have been engaging in way too many conversations with students and their parents about the way children are using technology at home. Please, please, please MONITOR your child's technology usage. Even if you think your child would not do anything wrong. Our suggestion is for you to treat technology the way you treat your child about using your bank accounts. You would not just give them free access would you? We know the pressures families have about having the latest and greatest technology. What if you were the family that had the latest and greatest family time together? What if all the kids wanted to come hang out at your place and play with just regular household items like balls, games, blocks, cardboard, or whatever else you may have that kids could use their imagination with? The conversations we are having with parents around technology are children using inappropriate adult language, posting inappropriate pictures, threatening comments, and violent video games. This makes us sad because we believe wholeheartedly in having our children be children. We believe in learning through play, using imagination, problem solving and having healthy, safe fun. Technology at school is used to enhance your child's learning in a positive healthy way with adults monitoring and supporting them along the way.
We want to make sure everyone knows Jenna Conley is our new Head Custodian! Her twin daughters Avery and Bria keep her busy at home. Please be sure to welcome Mrs. Conley next time you are at Schlegel. Every time you see Mrs. Conley she has a great big smile on her face while she is busy helping us at Schlegel. A great big THANK YOU to Mr. Resch for all his years of service at Schlegel. No worries-he is just a hop, skip and jump away! He is the Head Custodian over at Spry. And one more Thank you and congratulations to Mrs. Kilmer, Our Custodial Assistant. She has accepted a position as Head Custodian in Penfield. We wish her well in her new journey.
Be sure to save the date for a PTSA sponsored family night. Amy VanDerWater, children's author, will be visiting our school during the day and coming back at night on Friday, April 26. You will enjoy Amy-she is a captivating author!
Happy Spring!

Developing Healthy Routines: Our children appreciate and need routines. Routines provide children with a sense of security and can help them develop self-discipline. When something unexpected occurs, it can be especially difficult for a child to adjust. Unexpected changes can happen daily and can result in stress for that child. When we can provide a child with a predictable routine, it helps them have control within their lives and is a great way to teach children organizational skills and other constructive habits. The more routine and structure we can offer our children, the better they will be able to handle the unexpected changes that occur. When children are not following the routines, it often has more to do with organizational skills and development versus opposition or a poor choice. When we view “not following the routine” as a need for support with the skill versus behavior, it changes how we respond. We can teach how to break down tasks, how to use a visual reminder, and how to ask for clarification - resulting in increased independence and confidence for our children. Remember - Confidential support is always available for your child(ren) to assist through transitions of any kind. In addition, we can help in finding support for community resources your family may need. Please do not hesitate to contact us.

NOTES FROM THE NURSES- APRIL
Illnesses. We continue to see a lot of illnesses in school – mostly sore throats (viral or
strep throat), fevers, headaches and stomachaches. Remember to encourage your child
to wash their hands after blowing their nose, sneezing, or coughing. Medications may be
given in school. Parents may bring any medication into the Health Office, accompanied
with a signed physician order and the medicine.
Seasonal Allergies. As the weather starts to warm up, grass begins to grow, and
flowers and trees start to bud and blossom, so are seasonal allergy symptoms.
Symptoms may include, but not be limited to, clear, runny noses, post nasal drip, dry
cough, and watery or itchy eyes. If giving antihistamines to your child and they tend to
make him/her drowsy, give the dose before bed. If the opposite occurs (i.e.,
hyperactivity), give the dose during the daytime (morning or after school). Ask your
physician for which medicine is the most appropriate for your child’s allergy symptoms.

This national program recognizes the increasing problem of childhood obesity and encourages alternate activities, such as reading, being creative, and spending more time with family and friends. It used to be recognized as “Turn Off Your TV” week but now since there are so many electronic devices being used by families, it has been changed to encompass all electronics (i.e.,televisions, tablet computers, video games, etc.). For more information and lots of
activity resources, visit the link: https://www.screenfree.org/
Remember to call the attendance number (265-2513) if your child is ill or if you will be out of town.
Please call us at 216-6023 if you have any questions or concerns.

Staff of the Month for April
Mr. Picardo is great at finding strategies to communicate with my child in a way that makes sense to him. At our recent Parent Teacher conference, I had the opportunity to see first-hand how he works with him to get the best out of him. He asked my son a lot of questions, and with high expectations for answers, he pushed my son to complete deeper, more thoughtful answers, all while providing just the right amount of encouragement and praise to motivate my son. He has had an AMAZING year both academically and socially, and I truly believe it is because of the time and attention Mr. Picardo takes with him, finding strategies that really speak to my son, while providing just the right amount of encouragement. We feel truly lucky that our son has had the opportunity to be in Mr. Picardo's class this year. He is a GREAT Teacher, well-deserving of recognition for his teaching, and a fantastic asset to our school!

Infinite Campus & Student Portal Information
As a reminder, WCSD uses the Infinite Campus Parent & Student Portal Messenger system to send important emails, phone calls, and texts throughout the year, including school closings. Please note that your carrier’s message and data rates may apply if you choose the optional text option. Parents may update email information for their child(ren) through the portal by clicking on the Contact Preferences tab. The tab enables parents to decide the ways they receive important school and district messages and the types of messages they wish to receive. Any changes to existing Parent & Student Portal home address or phone numbers must be made by contacting your school’s administrative offices.
Individuals who need their IC activation code of who have questions should contact ICPortal@webstercsd.org.
