Today's Flipgrid - Fabulous Friday!
It's the last day of Earth Week - Arbor Day! Arbor Day was first named an official holiday in 1885. This is a day where many places hold celebrations to plant trees - which we usually do at JC! Today, you will be celebrating trees in your own way! Here are a few ideas - come back and share what you do!
Earth Week of Action
Friday - Arbor Day
FRIDAY: ARBOR DAY
Celebrate trees! Notice them and collect ‘tree seeds’!
Or just track how far you traveled today, pollution-free!
Activities:
Celebrate TREES on Arbor Day! Trees clean air, protect drinking water, are homes to animals, cool the land, and are beautiful!
Try these 4 things you can DO to celebrate trees!
NOTICE trees! How many can you see from where you are? How many different types? How high is the tallest, the smallest? Get outside if you can.
COLLECT ‘TREE SEEDS’! Acorns are oak tree ‘seeds.’ The red-brown colored spiky balls are sweet gum seeds. Greenwich has MANY types of trees and their seeds come in all shapes and sizes! Start a collection! Just ONE of as many types as you can find. Display them at home. Use iNaturalist to label them! Maybe another Earth Week of Action family will see your collection on your window sill!
STEP IT UP! Reduce your transportation footprint! Trees take carbon dioxide from our air and release oxygen. Give trees a break!! TODAY - use human power! Walk or bike or run or hike and count your steps or laps or miles and share your trip by tagging #GreenwichEarthWeek in your social media post.
READ BOOKS and APPRECIATE TREES! Read a book made from trees!
Youngest readers try The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. Learn to speak for those who can’t, and that one small seed, or action, can make a difference.
Older readers try, The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben. Trees are like human families: parents live together with their children, communicate with them, support them as they grow, share nutrients with the sick or struggling, and even warn each other of dangers! Trees are like very, very, very slow animals. Amazing!
Timing:
Anytime today!
How to Share:
Snap a photo or take a video of you counting trees outside, finding tree seeds, counting steps, or reading your tree book and hop into the JC Community Flipgrid to share! Mom or Dad can share on their Twitter account and tag with #GreenwichEarthWeek. You can even email a photo to Mrs. Brush (brenda_brush@greenwich.k12.ct.us) or Mrs. McGuire (trish_mcguire@greenwich.k12.ct.us) and they will share it on Twitter!
