"Out of clutter, find simplicity." Albert Einstein
At the end of 2015, I resolved to live a life less cluttered. I felt that my mind, workspace, and even home had been subject to the silent productivity assassin that is clutter. With all ambition, an open heart and mind, I began the journey of simplifying my life.
Like some people, not even 30 days into the New Year , I have let some of my resolutions fall to the wayside. This week I looked around my office and saw that I’ve been mired in mess, fuss, and complete disarray. Clutter can play a significant role in how we feel about our homes, our workplaces, and ourselves. Messy homes and work spaces leave us feeling anxious, helpless, and overwhelmed. Yet, rarely is clutter recognized as a significant source of stress in our lives.
Spencer Nguyen, our resident Nurse Practitioner at Lifestyle Medicine Solutions says, “Don’t stress about things you can’t control. However, clutter is something you can control .”
Why does mess lead to so much stress?
· Clutter bombards our minds with excessive stimuli (visual, olfactory, tactile), causing our senses to work overtime on stimuli that aren't necessary or important.
· Clutter distracts us by drawing our attention away from what our focus should be on.
· Clutter makes it more difficult to relax, both physically and mentally.
· Clutter constantly signals to our brains that our work is never done.
· Clutter makes us anxious because we're never sure what it's going to take to get through to the bottom of the pile.
· Clutter creates feelings of guilt ("I should be more organized") and embarrassment, especially when others unexpectedly drop by our homes or work spaces.
Elizabeth Scott, M.S, a Stress Management Expert, gives us tips on ways to declutter our lives: Quick Fix Tips for Clutter:
· Keep a schedule
· If you bring something in, get rid of something.
· Do a light cleaning at the end of every day.
· Do a more thorough cleaning once a week (or hire someone to do it for you, if it fits your budget.)
