WM Kindergarten Curriculum Update
May 2019
Reading and Writing
Reading
For the month of May we will be reading a varied amount of fiction and non-fiction texts and focusing on using all the tools we have learned throughout the school year to become resourceful readers. The emphasis is on independence through the following skills: using thinking strategies, being persistent problem solvers for challenging words and rereading to practice fluency, expression and comprehend the text. This Unit will send kindergarteners off with some important tools to continue to read throughout the summer, with the reminder that they are life-long readers and learners!
Writing
This month, we will study authors as mentors. This will help guide us to live, plan, and draft like real published authors. We will incorporate more writing techniques to strengthen our writing, working with increasing independence. Finally, we will “fancy up” our work through editing, focusing on spelling and conventions, in preparation to celebrate a piece of our writing.
Math
This month we are wrapping up Bridges unit 8, which focuses on measurement, mastering addition within 5, building fluency when adding within 10, and gaining a deeper understanding of subtraction.
Social Studies/Science
Students explore the idea that they are part of several larger communities. We zoom out and see we are a part of a neighborhood, a city, a state, etc. Students will learn that although people around the world are different, they are also alike in many ways! In Science we will explore life cycles of insects and plants as well as what plants and insects need to grow!
LMC - Library
We’ve learned a lot this year! We’ll experiment with a variety of apps to help us share our new knowledge with others.
Music
Mrs. Spahn’s classes will be working on: Reviewing all the musical concepts we have learned throughout the year through songs, dances, and instruments. Mrs. Spahn’s Music classes will also be having their Spring Music Sharing Days on June 3, 4, and 5! Look for more info to come home about this in June.
Ms. Soltis’ classes will be working on: learning about call & response form. We will also be starting our Maori stick routine and learning about the culture of the Maori people in New Zealand.
Technology
Students are creating original graphics and using clip art in drawing programs. Students are participating in online activities using internet safety rules.
Art
How and why do artists collaborate? How does art make us smart? (Wolverine Way Banner)

The month of May will be filled with our track & field unit, disc golf, and frisbee. We are looking forward to being able to get outside as much as possible!
