From the Principal's Pen
March 10, 2019
Don't forget to "Spring Ahead" this Sunday!
This expression wouldn’t exist without daylight saving time. Daylight saving time began to be implemented in the early 1900s, although Benjamin Franklin had proposed a similar idea in the 1700s.
The idea behind daylight saving time was to utilize daylight hours more efficiently by waking up earlier during the time of year in which the sun rose earlier and set earlier. Because the sun stays out longer during the spring and summer months, people move their clocks forward in the springtime. They move them back in the fall, or autumn.
Newspapers had begun printing the mnemonic device "spring forward fall back" as early as the 1920s. This relates to the word play, in which spring forward means jump forward (the movement of the clocks) as well as spring the season. Likewise, fall back means to topple backwards (the movement of the clocks) as well as the autumn season.

Community Service Awards
Since 1986, the Greenwich Public Schools’ Community Service Awards Program has recognized the value of service to our local, national and global community annually. Each year, students from each school in Greenwich are chosen to represent their school community and be recognized for their work in serving others.
This year, fifth graders Nicolas Sosa (5F) and Paola Jaramillo (5S) have been chosen to represent Julian Curtiss School. Both students volunteer their time as part of the Julian Curtiss Service Club where they have taken part in projects like Socktober, the annual Neighbor to Neighbor food drive, and the Change the World fundraiser to help disadvantaged children in Bogotá, Colombia. Nicolas was chosen to be a mindfulness ambassador and has been a role model in lunch bunches, helping peers with special needs to work on social skills like sharing, taking turns, and working cooperatively. Paola helps to dismiss kindergarten students at the end of each school day, and works very hard to make all of her peers feel welcomed and included.
Nicolas and Paola will be honored at the Greenwich Public Schools Community Service Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, March 12th at 5:00 pm at the Greenwich High School Performing Arts Center.
Congratulations to Nicolas and Paola! We are so proud to have you represent the Julian Curtiss School community!
