ROCKET NEWS
December 2016
Our Read-A-Thon will begin on Monday, December 5, 2016. Students will read for 300 minutes in school and raise money online to purchase books and other reading resources. Each day will have a special theme, so be sure to check out the calendar of events! Last year we raised $15,736.97. If we beat that goal this year, Ms. Young, Mrs. DeWeese, and Mrs. Nelson-Tracey will get pies in the face from the top earners in each grade!
Take a good hard look at your bookshelves. Does your child have books that they’ve outgrown or out read, just sitting there gathering dust, and taking up space? Wouldn’t it be great if you could wave a magic wand and transform one of them into a book they want to read? Now you can at the Woodholme Book Swap on Thursday, December 15, 2016! Click on the swap title/link for more information.
Come to a BCPS Night of Innovation and experience digital playgrounds, innovative student projects, and more. December 1st from 6:30 - 8:00 PM at Owings Mills High School, Chesapeake Terrace ES, Harford Hills ES, and Prettyboy ES.
Student Daily Attendance in BCPS One
Beginning Thursday, December 1, 2016, parents will have the ability to view student daily attendance information within BCPS One. If you do not have a BCPS One account, please contact your child's teacher for information to set up your account.
All ESOL students in grades K - 5 will take an English (WIDA) exam in January / February. They will be tested in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Reports of results will not be available until the end of May.

Lost & Found
Woodholme’s “Lost & Found” is overflowing with unlabeled and unclaimed sweaters, jackets, coats, hats, etc! All unclaimed items will be donated to a clothing closet over winter break.
Nurse's Nook
Don’t hibernate this winter. Dress appropriately and get outside for fresh air and exercise! Eat well and sleep well. Reassess: Does my child need medication at school? Do they have a change of clothing in their locker? Stay home for one full day after having fever, diarrhea, and vomiting.
Early Dismissal
In the event that schools close early due to weather, all children should be aware of how they are to dismiss. Any changes to normal dismissal procedures must be put in writing to your child's teacher.
Please view the December calendar for information on upcoming events at Woodholme! We are excited about our Read-A-Thon and are looking forward to everyone's participation!
A Note From the Principal
Dear Families,
What a busy month November was for us! We appreciated all of the parents, grandparents and family members who visited us during American Education week. It was a great chance for teachers to showcase student achievement at Woodholme and to show what students are learning and doing at school, so thank you to all who were able to join us! As always, we remain thankful for the support from our families. Teachers are working extremely hard to plan and provide engaging and meaningful academic instruction, so parent support and collaboration is crucial and appreciated. We are also grateful to the parents who met with teachers for Parent-Teacher conferences this month. Students are more successful when their parents take an active role in their learning, so thanks to those parents and guardians who partnered with teachers to discuss student progress. It's not too late if you were unable to meet with your child's teachers. Email or call teachers to set up a date/time to discuss your child's progress and how you can help your child be more successful. Thanks for working together!
December brings our 4th annual Read-A-Thon! Students, teachers and administrators will be reading, reading, reading in order to practice reading skills while raising funds to use towards classroom reading books and materials. We are excited to share this opportunity, so look for your email about setting up your child's Read-A-Thon page. This year the students and teachers would like to exceed last year's amount raised, and all three administrators have agreed to let the top student fundraiser in each grade level toss a pie in our faces! I'll be a "sweet" activity since we'd love to see the students and teachers get so many more books and materials for the classroom. Once the Read-A-Thon ends we'll look at the amounts raised, and the top earner for each grade level will then be announced.
Enjoy the exciting month of December, and we wish all of our Woodholme families a relaxing and peaceful holiday season!
Sincerely,
Principal Young
