The Weekly Howl
St. Francis Catholic School - Sunday, February 16th
Dear SFCS Parents & Friends,
Many of our awesome programs and opportunities cannot occur with out the amazing time, talent and treasure of everyone that supports our school's mission. One opportunity that is coming up is the Family School Associations largest fundraiser of the year, our Casino Night Gala and Golf Tournament on Saturday, March 14th. Traditionally the FSA's gala earns over $60,000.00 dollars for our school. That calculates to about $300.00 per child at SFCS in supporting our school in ensuring we have the resources we need in offering a quality academic and authentically Catholic school education.
This month the FSA will continue to be asking for donations for the live and silent auction at our Casino themed Gala. Not only will our gym be transformed into a Vegas style casino, there will also be great food catered by the Salty Dog Cafe, music and dancing by our favorite DJ Alan and much more. It also is time to purchase your tickets and/or sponsorships if you have not already. I thank you in advance in support of our FSA and school with what will be an exciting and fun day for our school community.
I hope you are enjoying your President's Day weekend!
Sincerely in Christ,
Brian Pope
Principal

Prekindergarten
Discovery Lab - Prekindergarten
Prekindergarten began exploring constructing and engineering structures with amazing new materials for our Discovery Lab and Science program called KEVA Planks. These planks are engaging for students from Pre-K through adulthood. Students worked collaboratively and individually to construct hotels, houses, towers, symmetrical artwork, letters, and more. Leonardo daVinci once said "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." This is an apt description of these engaging and educational planks.
Kindergarten
The Kindergarten students celebrated the 100th Day of School by becoming detectives in a Spy Lab and completing missions.
Discovery Lab - Kindergarten
Kindergarten also explored what they could create with our Keva Planks. They had an open exploration of what could be done with this material. In the future they will learn about engineering skills like creating cantilevered structures, solving challenging problems, problem solving and creating works of art. They were curious to see if the planks were the same "size" so students were introduced to their digital scales and determined that the mass of the planks was not exactly the same.
6th Grade - Social Studies
Ancient Greece board games! The students created review games, and took turns playing each group’s board games, ranging from Greekopolis, to Greece Headbands, to Greece Sorry, to Greek Trivia!
7th Grade - Religion
7th graders created crosses to represent the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. They learned the differences and commonalities of these and exemplified those on each part of the cross.
7th Grade - Science
The 7th graders are looking forward to a special event! The Greenwood Genetics Center is bringing the Gene Machine to our seventh grade science class on February 26. Students will have the opportunity to work in a state of the art fully equipped genetics lab staffed by professional geneticists. Stay tuned for more information about the exciting experiments they get to conduct!
8th Grade - Social Studies
8th graders are busy creating Civil War projects: ABCs of the Civil War booklets, Civil War Jeopardy, and investigating diary/journal entries of soldiers, their records of service, battle images, and more!
8th Grade - Honors Physical Science
The 8th grade students began applying the knowledge they learned about forces and Newton's Laws of Motion to the design and construction of a roller-coaster. Student groups will be working engineers and artists when they design, build, test, revise, and retest their roller-coasters. They need to make sure that the roller-coaster consistently performs safely and gives the rider an exciting experience. In addition, they will aim to complete the project's construction within an allotted budget. Their teams will work to maximize each team member's strengths as they divide the labor to deliver a product within a given time frame. They will need to satisfy their customer by making it as visually appealing and exciting as possible within the given parameters for size and thrills.

No-Sew Blanket Kit Project
Dear Parents,
The FSA is proud to once again be assisting The Women of St. Francis with their No-Sew Blanket Kit Project. The WOSF will be donating the completed baby blankets to Volunteers in Medicine, and will then distributed to The Pregnancy Center of the Low Country, and for children's dentist appointments. The larger lap blankets will be distributed to Life Care Center for wheelchair blankets.
The school has been given 19 blankets kits (8 baby blankets and 11 lap blankets) and we are looking for volunteers to assemble blankets. The kits include the material and instructions are provided. These blankets are very easy to make, though the WOSF have also recommended YouTube tutorials.
Completed blankets can be returned to the FSA, via the School Office, no later than Tuesday, March 3rd. If you are interested in helping, please click on the Sign-Up Genius link below. Kits will be sent home with your child early next week.
