Germanium
Ryan Donovan and Keaton Cain
Introduction
Chemical Properties- Stable in air and water, it is unaffected by alkalis and acids.
Compounds/uses- Germanium oxide (added to glass). It is also used in transistors and integrated circuits. Lastly, Germanium is used in radiation detectors.
Isotopes- Has 5 naturally occurring Isotopes, 70Ge, 72Ge, 73Ge, 74Ge, and 76Ge. 76Ge is also radioactive.
Atom
This is the atom of the element germanium. It has 32 protons and electrons, and 41 neutrons. It has 2 electrons in the first level 8 in the second, 18 in the third and 2 in the outer most level.
Transistor
This is a high speed integrated circuit, these are made of the element germanium and are used for specific electronic functions. When doped with small amounts of arsenic, gallium, indium, antimony or phosphorus, germanium is used to make transistors for use in electronic devices.
Light Bulb
Germanium is also used to create alloys and as a phosphor in fluorescent lamps.
