Principal Notes
Dear Cimarron Families,
Happy New Year and welcome to second semester at Cimarron! We have had an incredible start to the new year and are looking forward to all of the excitement that second semester brings. Though the new year brings excitement, it also poses the challenge of pushing through the second semester slump that often occurs.
Our students have spent their time and energy during first semester developing their academic, social and emotional skills. Sometimes this initial effort can be so great that it leads to a bit of a burn out in second semester. It takes grit and perseverance to continue to grow and develop as a middle school student.
I'd like to take time to consider Dr. Angela Duckworth's research on grit. Her work has focused on the question, "Who is successful and why?" Through her research, Duckworth found that effort is the most important predictor of success and named this ongoing effort as grit. So, how can we develop grit in our students? How might we encourage grit both at home and at school? One answer may be to support our students in developing their growth mindset. A person that has developed their growth mindset knows that their ability to learn is not fixed. Instead, they believe their talents can be developed through hard work.
So as we embark on our second semester journey, please consider how we all can work together to create a community that encourages a growth mindset and grit. These qualities will help our students push through the second semester slump and find success. Included below is Angela Duckworth's famous Ted Talk on Grit for your viewing.

Donations Accepted For the BeRED Program!
BeRED is the Positive Behavior program at Cimarron. It not only outlines expectations of our students and shows how they can improve the lives of others, but also rewards those who do the right thing through “red cards.” These cards are administered by any staff member when they observe students exhibiting behavior that can be categorized as “RESPECT,” “EXCELLENCE,” or “DETERMINATION.”
When students receive a red card they write their name on it and enter it into a drawing which occurs every Friday. In order to make this process meaningful for students, we are continually looking for prizes that show our gratitude for Cimarron students who exhibit proper behavior, and have received donations from local business (such as free items and gift cards) to provide for these amazing students.
If you would like to donate a prize that will be used in the program, you can reach out to Assistant Principals Tanner Fitch (atfitch@dcsdk12.org) or Brett Michel (bmichel@dcsdk12.org) to share your donation. Prizes can also be dropped off in the main office to be designated to the BeRED program.
Thank you all for your continued support of our students, go Colts!
