Next week we will celebrate Read Across America but every day is a good day to play with words. The practice of rhyming is enjoyable for preschoolers and is a predictor of later reading success. It aids in teaching early literacy skills like phonemic awareness and alphabet knowledge. As children learn to rhyme, they develop the ability to break words down into smaller parts as if they were puzzle pieces, as in words like c-ook and b-ook.
During your time together try using small moments to play silly games with your child by using nonsense words that rhyme, like moodle and coodle. Your child is sure to laugh and you will definitely spark an interest in rhyming. Then create more intentional moments while you're in the car listening to songs or reading a book at bedtime by pointing out words that rhyme. Through this exposure and other wordplays, your child is growing their vocabulary, understanding sounds, and having fun while learning!
Speaking of fun, we have so many things planned this month! Please read through the entire newsletter and join us for our Read Across America activities, our HSA event, and many more fun-filled days.

Why Investigate Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling?
Trash and garbage are all around us and young children are fascinated with things in the environment - even rubbish! A study of reducing, reusing, and recycling not only offers opportunities for children to explore a topic that interests them but allows them to gather information, become more aware of the world around them, and solve problems. In this study, children will observe, gather data, explore their community, interview experts, learn new information, and propose solutions to problems. Heavy stuff for a preschooler, I know!

Morris Educational Foundation (MEF)
To assist families with self-health checks, the MEF partnered with CVS to provide digital thermometers for families in need. Families looking to obtain a thermometer can contact the school nurses at 973-292-2200 extension 4.
The MEF is also committed to partnering with the district as we move forward towards greater inclusion and diversity. To build that commitment, the MEF and Morristown Festival of Books will provide funding for all pre-k to 12 district libraries. Each school will receive funding to diversify and expand its library collections for teacher use and student reading. The goal is for every student to find books that mirror and reflect who they are, while also sharing a window into others' lives.
If you are not familiar with the MEF, check out this link to explore all they have done to enhance educational opportunities for the Morris School District.
