EDUCATE YOURSELF – FAQ’s ABOUT WISCONSIN PARENTAL CHOICE PROGRAM
At our 2nd Open Forum, Principals from three WELS elementary schools (St. Matthew, Oconomowoc; St. Paul, Muskego; and St. Mark, DePere) were available to share their experience with the Wisconsin and Milwaukee Choice programs. We thank them for providing insight as to how the Choice programs have impacted their schools. Our attendees asked:
What mix of students came to your school via the Choice programs?
The students who enrolled in the three schools via the Choice programs were either already students at the school, or were members of the congregation who were finally able to afford a Christian education for their children using the Parental Choice programs.
Did you find you needed to provide extra educational support to students who enrolled via the Choice programs?
Across the three schools, nearly all the students did not require any additional support. At Trinity, we currently have an Extended Learning Teacher (Mrs. Sarah Kaulitz) who provides help, as needed, to our students. They all noted that their Parental Choice students didn’t need any more or less extra support than their current student body.
Did you see a change in culture at your school as a result of becoming a “Choice” school?
The Principals agreed that when they look at their students, they do not see a “Choice” or “Non-Choice” student. They see children that they are blessed to share God’s Word with. Also, they pointed out that the culture of the school is already in place simply because of the current faculty and staff, and by the fact that they teach God’s Word every day, in every class.
The question of WI Parental Choice now goes to the Voters where they will consider the proposed plan that was shared with all school families before the second open forum. Prayerfully consider whether we should become part of the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program. We have an excellent Lutheran School. Is Parental Choice a way for us to be able to share a Christ-centered education with more children in the future? Much information has been shared. If you want some clarification or wish to share a concern, please contact Principal Justin Gut at the school office.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The time of the Voters Meeting has been changed to allow more people the opportunity to attend. (From Saturday night to Sunday morning after late service.) The Voters Meeting will take place on Sunday, December 3rd at 12:15 p.m. May the Lord richly bless our church and her school as she seeks to proclaim his truth to the next generation!
