Updates from our Intervention Coordinator-Lisa Martinez
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Welcome back teachers. I hope that your Winter Break was enjoyable and restful. As we begin the new year, I am excited to support students and teachers in meeting our SPSA Goals in ELA. We will be reviewing and discussing our SPSA Plan 2021-2022 during our Pupil Free Day.
ELA
Implementation Objective: By June 2022, 100% of classrooms will implement daily Literacy Academies to target literacy skills during small group instruction. DIBELS progress monitoring will be used to monitor the effectiveness of these academies and will be collected every 2-3 weeks for students at the intensive and strategic levels. DIBELS data will be analyzed three times during the school year to evaluate progress at a school wide level.
Improvement Objective: By June 2022, 70% of students in grades K-6 will meet Benchmark or Above Benchmark as measured by DIBELS 8 from 57% MOY 2021 to 70% EOY 2022.
Notes from our Intervention Coordinator-Vanessa Chavez
Literacy Academy Groups
Happy New Years and welcome back! Hope everyone had a restful and much needed Winter Break. After analyzing the Progress Monitoring I administered before the break, there has been some changes to the Literacy Academy groups. I will email you an updated list of students I will be working with and the focus for the next couple of weeks. If you have any questions, please email or call room 6.
Break Through Challenge
Our 2nd grade students have been participating in a "Breakthrough Challenge". The Breakthrough Team (2nd grade teachers, Ms. Muro, Ms. Gutierrez, Ms. Martinez and myself) met weekly to discuss Progress Monitoring results and what next steps need to take place to continue to meet their needs. The goal was that 21 out of 27 students read 15 more words in a minute than they did in the BOY. The 10- week Challenge is over, and we did not meet our goal BUT there was tremendous growth all around! 17 students were able to meet the goal.
Some of the major take always that I got out of this Challenge is that Progress Monitoring, data analysis, and collaboration works in meeting our student's needs. For this New Year, I will continue this Breakthrough process with the Literacy Academy groups.
Reminder-PE Certification for December is Due
Parent/Teacher Conferences-Week of January 24
Focus on Classroom Observations-Standard 3: Delivery of Instruction
As we visit classrooms, we will be focusing on the following two elements:
3b2. Discussion Techniques and Student Participation Techniques are used to ensure that all students share their thinking around challenging questionsEffective Practice: Teacher uses intentional, differentiated strategies to engage all students in discussion, attempting gradual release from teacher-directed to student initiated conversation. Students participate in intellectually challenging discussions.
3c1. Standards-Based Projects, Activities and Assignments Standards-aligned learning activities cognitively engage students in the lesson
Effective Practice: Instructional projects, activities and assignments are aligned to the instructional standards, require higher levels of thinking, are culturally relevant, and may include real-world application. Most students are cognitively engaged, constructing their own understanding and exploring content. The learning activities are differentiated, as necessary, to meet the learning needs of student subgroups.
During the month of January, I will be observing math and ELD instruction. The focus of the observation will be on opportunities for student discourse. I will schedule the observations based on your instructional schedules to ensure that I have enough time in the classroom to observe multiple opportunities for students to engage in discussion protocols.
