WORD OF THE WEEK - "Teamwork"
Teamwork means working with group members to achieve a common goal.
“The strength of the team is each individual member...the strength of each member is the team.”
--Phil Jackson
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Bumpus Family,
Let's take a moment to celebrate two of our awesome 8th grade students who have been recognized by the Hoover Service Club for exemplary performance in academics and citizenship. The Hoover Service Club is a local civic group committed to furthering education for Hoover students by awarding scholarships for Hoover City School students at the high school level and recognizing students at the middle school level for their exemplary performance in academics and citizenship. The Hoover Service Club has announced that two 8th grade students from Bumpus Middle are being recognized and honored in the areas of academics and citizenship.
Phanuelle Manuel for Academic Performance (Team 8-1)
John Mark Norris for Citizenship (Team 8-2)
Congratulations to Phanuelle and John Mark! We are proud of both of you.

NEWS FROM OUR BOOKKEEPER...
REFUND CHECKS - Some of you may receive a refund check from Bumpus in the next few weeks for field trips and other events that were cancelled. Please note that our checks are tied to the student’s record so the check is made out to your child. Have them endorse the check and deposit it as soon as possible. We will continue to send out refunds as we receive the funds back from deposits made to various companies and are authorized to do so by our CSFO. Thank you for your patience.
Yearbooks
We do not have updated information from our yearbook vendor. When we receive notification that their employees have returned to work, we will then make plans for distribution once the books arrive.
Chromebooks and Locker Contents
We will continue with Chromebook drop-off (for the most critical issues) and pick-up as well as locker content distribution each Monday, 10:30 - 12:30.
BumpusHelp
In the event you are unable to reach your classroom teacher, grade level counselor or grade level administrator, we have a dedicated email address that will be responded to by our Communication Team (bumpushelp@hoover.k12.al.us). While there will likely be someone on campus each M, T, and W to receive mail and deliveries, the building will not be open to the public. Most access to the building by students, parents and teachers will be by appointment only.
BumpusPR
Additionally, because we want to maintain our connection to you during this time, please continue to use our BumpusPR@hoover.k12.al.us to share family and community news and at home learning photos. We love hearing from you and often use the information in our student eNews slides and on our social media platforms. If you haven't already, as a means of staying connected, check us out and share on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
Morning Announcements...Pledge
Our students have continued to lead us in the pledge each morning. You can find the morning pledge and any morning announcements on our Engaged Learning at Home page on our website.
Peace
Dr. Tamala R. Maddox

"Engaged Learning at Home" Initiative Tips for Success
Each week and each day, throughout the day, review these tips for success.
Start each Monday morning by going to the Bumpus website to get your Academic team and your Electives/PE Week at a Glance (WAAG).
Make sure to READ all directions and try first before immediately sending a message to a friend or email to a teacher.
Like you do in class, ask at least two buddies for clarification before asking the teacher.
Read/Watch each teacher’s directions very carefully, maybe twice. Most of your questions are probably answered there.
Each subject is broken up so you should spend around 30 minutes a day.
We would like you to work daily, so your assignments do not pile up. Reach out to your teachers if this is a problem for you and your family.
Take breaks between subjects.
Remember, iNow is your teacher's gradebook. They will be putting in grades as assignments are completed. When you see a .01, it means the assignment has not been turned in yet. Work to get them in so you can stay on track.
Continue to check emails, Google Classroom, and INOW at least once a day, if not more.
NEWS FROM YOUR COUNSELORS
How Can I Support My Child If They Are Experiencing Anxiety During COVID-19?
Many causes or contributing factors can lead to anxiety and stress during COVID -19; social isolation, school work, uncertainty about the pandemic, etc. Here are some ways you can help:
“Knowledge is power.” Make sure you have the facts from trusted groups like the CDC.
Develop a routine that matches as close to what it was before we had to socially isolate.
Listen and check in frequently with your child.
Make sure you and your child practice self-care: get enough sleep, eat healthily, and exercise.
Make sure to stay virtually connected. This is good for kids and adults. Speak with friends, family, teachers, counselors, and co-workers.
Make plans for activities you can do together - watch a movie, go for a bicycle ride, go for a hike. Build activities into your weekly routine.
Teach coping skills - deep breathing, walking, journaling, reading, drawing, etc.
Be mindful of screen time. Too much information often causes anxiety and stress. Recognize when news or other media might be causing an increase in anxiety symptoms, and know that it is okay to unplug when needed
Focus on the positive.
Always reach out to your counselor if you need assistance. Counselors are still here and available to help students, parents, and families.
Your grade level counselors are available through email and our Google classrooms. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, concerns or needs.

Hoover Public Library News
The Hoover Public Library has valuable resources. Here is a message from Katie Jane Morris at Hoover Public Library.
HPL is here to support our librarians, educators, students, and families during these unusual and often difficult times. Please help us spread the word!
Hoover Public Library WEBSITE
http://www.hooverlibrary.org/
This gives you access to our downloadable services, Katie Jane's daily blog post (which is filled with resources), and the help form. This is the best way to get fast answers from the library regarding important issues -- getting and using a library card, downloading digital resources, finding resources for children, getting book recommendations, using technology, doing online research, and more. A person simply gives their name, number, email, and request, and a staff member quickly provides an answer.

LITERARY MAGAZINE
Calling all song writers, poets, artists, photographers, and authors. The literary magazine needs you. We are looking for submissions for this year ́s magazine, which will be published online. This year's theme is war and peace. Any drawings, writings, or photos that connect to this theme are acceptable, and students should consider posting submissions about their experiences dealing with COVID-19 (the Coronavirus). Some have claimed that we are in a time of war, so we would like to hear/see the battles students are going through or the peace they have encountered in the face of it. Submit your work through the following link: https://forms.gle/g4FSwN4tNpMn5jVW7. Deadline for submissions is April 30th.
SCHOOL MEDICATIONS
Please email Melanie Schmith at mschmith@hoover.k12.al.us to discuss any needs for medication pick up. These will be handled on an individual basis.
The 2019-2020 PHOTO CONTEST hosted by Mr. Doss has been canceled due to events beyond our control and the limited amount of photo submissions to this year’s photo contest. I appreciate those who did make submissions and those images will be showcased. If you submitted to this year’s contest, Mr. Doss will be choosing up to ten of your top shots submitted and post them on his photography class Instagram page at Instagram.com/rfb_photo. Feel free to contact Mr. Doss with any questions.

FUN ACTIVITIES DURING "COVID-19"
"A wonderful person in our community has offered up for people to come and do a socially distant workout three times a week. The majority of the group consist of several of our Bumpus 7th graders. There is an 8th grader in there too. Most of them have been consistently coming since mid-March!" Fantastic! - Thank you, Mrs. Boyd.
CONGRATULATIONS to Maggie Bain, team 7-3! Maggie, with the help of her mother, has made 200 masks for area doctors, nurses, police officers and neighbors. Way to go, Maggie!
