Walter Milton Myers was born on August 12th, 1937 in Martinsburg, West Virginia. He was given away to Herbert Dean and his wife Florence Dean. They lived in Harlem, New York. He lived in a neighborhood the revolved around a church. He was smart but didn't do well in school. He dropped out of high school when he was 17 and joined the army. He loved basketball, but wan't good enough to play college ball. His teacher told him no matter what you do just keep on writing. Then, years later while he was working on a construction job in New York he remembered what his teacher said. That night he went home and started writing. He wrote about the most difficult time in his life his teenage years.
