Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! For supporting WEPA, Steeby's and Baker's parent group, for your support of the Walk-A-Thon last month. Thousands of dollars were raised, and this parent group ensures that the students, and community, benefit directly!
Parent/Teacher Conferences were a huge success! Thank you for coming in to visit with your child's teacher. As a building, Steeby had 98% of all students represented! This is a fantastic number, and shows one more reason why this is a great community to be in.
Help us help your child by promoting our three main positive behavior expectations at home;
1) Be Safe
2) Be Respectful
3) Be Responsible.

Absence Reporting
Just a reminder, calling your child in absent will not excuse the absence unless they have a doctor's note when they return.
MEDICAL ALERT
Dear Parents:
If you haven't seen the coverage on the news, there is a condition affecting children called Acute Flaccid Myelitis or simply known as AFM. Although rare, it is a serious condition and we want you to be aware of symptoms. AFM can possibly be caused by a virus, environmental toxins or both but the polio or non polio enteroviruses as well as the west nile virus are believed to be a possible cause. Symptoms to look for if your child is a sudden onset of arm or leg weakness with a loss of muscle tone and reflexes. Others may experience a facial droop/weakness, difficulty moving the eyes, drooping eyelids, or difficulty with swallowing or slurred speech. As always, its a good idea to practice good hand washing and keeping your child home if they appear ill. If you're ever concerned with the way your child is acting, don't hesitate to call your physician so they can be evaluated.
Thank you,

A Note from Music Class
Hello 4th grade families. Recorders have been distributed! Learning the recorder helps young music students experience music in new ways. Reading music is like learning a new language and stimulates the brain. I realize that the recorder can make a less than desirable sound in amateur hands. This being said I would appreciate it if you would encourage your child to make music. I generally don’t assign playing homework, but I do strongly encourage practicing outside of class. Some of the students have informed me that they can play songs already! Tips for playing at home that will save your ears: establish playing times (example: only after dinner), establish playing areas (example: only in bedroom), and practice behavior (example: only musical practice, no chasing siblings around with recorder).
I do require the students to bring their recorder and book to class every day. I take participation points off their grade for each day they forget one of these items. The students understand this expectation; recorders are good for teaching responsibility as well as music.
Sincerely,
Mr. Truswell
Media Center News
October has been a busy month in media. Students have been practicing logging in to the computer using their unique log in. Students have also been visiting the new and improved Information Place: https://sites.google.com/waylandunion.org/libraries/home. Students can also use Information Place at home. We have been going to Abcya.com, Bookflix, My Storymaker, PBS Kids and Tumble Books which can all be found on the New Information Place website.
November is picture book month! So next month we will be talking about picture books and the Caldecott medal. Students will learn about the Caldecott award which is for best illustrations in a picture book. Students will be discussing picture books and voting on them during our Mock Caldecott unit in November and December. Happy November and Happy Picture Book Month!
