Kindergarten -Empathy can motivate students to respond to others in a caring way. Young students often try to comfort others through physical affection, by offering a toy, or by saying something comforting. However, students may have trouble showing care and concern in emotionally overwhelming situations. Unit 3 includes emotion-management skills to help further students’ ability to offer support. Feeling empathy and expressing care and concern are different from each other, and both require practice. Click here for a Home Link activity.
1st Grade -The objective of this lesson is to recognize that we are all different and the importance of respecting those differences.
2nd Grade - The objective of the lesson is to be able to identify your positive qualities.
3rd Grade - This lesson continues to build students’ perspective-taking ability by examining scenarios where people have different feelings about the same thing. Perspective-taking is a critical skill for working in groups, making friends, and successfully resolving interpersonal conflicts.
4th Grade - The students will learn the definition of diversity as the condition of having or being composed of differing elements: variety; especially the inclusion of different types of people in a group or organization. The objective of the lesson is to accept and celebrate our differences.
5th Grade - Having empathy and expressing concern are two different skills. Both skills require practice. This lesson puts empathy into action, with a focus on children responding sensitively and respectfully to their peers. By directly expressing empathy, students can help their peers feel less isolated, provide emotional support in difficult circumstances, and strengthen friendships. Students who are bullied can experience fewer difficulties if other students are compassionate and show them empathy and support. Increasing students’ ability to show compassion helps to create a caring and positive school climate.

Health Services - New Covid-19 Form
The Waterford Graded School District has a new form available to you when it is necessary to report a Covid-19 absence.
- If your student has tested positive for COVID, please stay home and notify the Attendance Office. Fill out the following Google form.
Absences related to COVID ISOLATION will continue to be medically excused only if proper documentation is provided, including a photo of your positive home test or written statement from a healthcare provider. Medical absences due to COVID will be acceptable for 5 days. If at the end of the 5 days, the student still has a fever and/or symptoms aren’t improving, then they need to continue their isolation until those criteria are met. At this point, to be excused any additional days, a doctor’s excuse will need to be provided for absences to be marked as medically excused.
Here you can also find other helpful information under the Parent Links for some of the more common illnesses we will see this winter.
