Inclined Plane

By: Josh Mulumba and Stu Wheeler

Definition

An inclined plane is a flat supporting surface tilted at an angle, with one end higher than the other, used as an aid for raising or lowering a load.

Examples

  1. A wheelchair ramp at a mall
  2. Ramp to move things in and out of a moving truck

Mechanical Advantage

  • MA= Ramp Length/ Ramp height or output force/ input force
  • A 500-newton cart is lifted to a height of 1 meter using a 10-meter long ramp. You can see that the worker only has to use 50 newtons of force to pull the cart

    MA= 10
