Basic First Aid Information

For Adults

Checking and Injured or ill adult

1. Check for responsiveness

2. If not response, call 9-1-1

If there is a response, obtain consent and call 9-1-1

3. Open the airway

4. Check for breathing

5. Quick scan for severe bleeding

Conscious Chocking

  1. Give 5 back blows
  2. Give 5 abdominal thrusts
  3. Continue care until object is forced out and person can forcefully cough and breathe

Unconscious chocking

  1. Give rescue breaths
  2. Give 30 chest compressions
  3. Look for and remove object if seen
  4. Give 2 rescue breaths

CPR- no breathing

  1. Give 30 chest compressions
  2. Give 2 rescue breaths
  3. Do not stop

AED

  1. Turn on AED
  2. Wipe bare chest dry
  3. Attach pads
  4. Plug in connector, if necessary
  5. Stand clear
  6. Analyze heart rhythm
  7. Deliver schock
  8. Preform CPR

Controlling external bleeding

  1. Cover the wound
  2. Apply direct pressure until bleeding stops
  3. Cover the dressing with bandage
  4. Apply more pressure and call 9-1-1

Burns

  1. Remove from source of burn
  2. Cool the burn
  3. Cover loosely with sterile dressing
  4. Call 9-1-1
  5. Care for shock

Poising

  1. Call 9-1-1 or poison control hotline
  2. Provide care

Head, neck, or spinal injuries

  1. Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number
  2. Minimize movement
  3. Stabilize head

Stroke

  1. Think F.A.S.T
  • Face- does one side of face droop?
  • Arm- does one arm drift downward?
  • Speech- Is the speech slurred?
  • Time- Try to determine the time when the signals first appeared
