Principal's Message
Good Afternoon Pirate Families,
As we approach the holidays, I continue to see our students engaged in their daily classes/lessons during these challenging times. By now, parents should have received their student’s First Quarter Grade Report in the mail. Please talk to your student regarding their academic progress. To support our students, there are two new resources that have been implemented this school year.
My Tutor:
-24/7 tutoring available in all subjects
-Students receive instant live help from educators
-Includes essay review tool that provides students detailed feedback on their writing
Khan Academy:
-Implemented to support students during distance learning
-Activities tailored to student’s specific needs
-Includes instructional videos and practice exercises
To fully support your students, it is important that both students and parents are checking their emails and Schoology regularly. Teachers are sending communication which includes information regarding office hours, tutoring, and opportunities to make up missed assignments. I appreciate your support as we continue to work together as you are an instrumental stakeholder in your student’s education.
On behalf of our Pirate staff, we wish you a restful and healthy holiday break. Enjoy your time off, next week, November 23rd-27th. We look forward to seeing all of our students back in class on November 30th.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Salcido

Textbook Reading Tips
There are some simple methods that you can use to pay better attention and get more out of your textbook reading time. Different authors call it different things, but many researchers say that you will improve your comprehension if you somehow "preview" the passage before you actually sit down and read every word.
To do a preview you:
- take 30 to 60 seconds.
- look over the title of the chapter.
- look at all the headings, subheadings and marked, italic or dark print.
- look at any pictures or illustrations, charts or graphs.
- quickly skim over the passage, reading the first and last paragraph and glancing at the first sentence of every other paragraph.
- close the book and ask yourself:
- ---What is the main idea?
- ---What kind of writing is it?
- ---What is the author's purpose?
You might not think that you could possibly answer these questions with so little exposure to the material, but if you do the preview correctly, you should have some very good general ideas. If you have a general idea of what the passage is about before you really read it, you will be able to understand and remember the passage better.
When you finally get to the point where you are actually slowly reading the passage, read in a "questioning" manner -as if you were seaching for something. It sometimes helps if you take the heading or title of a chapter and turn it into a question.
For example, if the heading of a section in the text is "The Causes of the Civil War", take that title and switch it into a question like: "What are the causes of the Civil War?". Now you have a goal; something to look for; something to find out. When you are goal-oriented, you are more likely to reach the goal. At least you'll remember one thing about the text which you have just read.
KHAN Academy
Khan Academy is in its first year of implementation at the high school level. All students have district accounts and can access Khan Academy through Classlink. 9-12 Mathematics teachers are using Khan in the classroom on a weekly basis to support student distance learning and engagement. Weekly use allows the teacher to use a revolving approach to create activities tailored to students' specific needs. A teacher determines students' needs, examines Khan resources, and designs and assigns an activity to be completed by students. Khan resources include instructional videos, practice exercises, articles (which include interactive notes and worked out exercises), assessments, course mastery, and SAT preparation.
