AMCMS Principal's Office
What is going on in the Principal's Office?
My Challenge to You
Read this excerpt:
But perhaps Flanagan’s bigger accomplishment lies in nurturing and promoting the rising talent around her, a rare quality in the cutthroat world of elite sports. Every single one of her training partners — 11 women in total — has made it to the Olympics while training with her, an extraordinary feat. Call it the Shalane Effect: You serve as a rocket booster for the careers of the women who work alongside you, while catapulting forward yourself.
Shalane is a world class athlete. She has made a living through her running. Most people would say that she is CRAZY to help others to be as successful or more successful that she is because that could only hurt her when it comes to making a living.
What is her attitude when it comes to helping others to operate at their highest levels?
Read this:
“I thoroughly enjoy working with other women,” Flanagan told me. “I think it makes me a better athlete and person. It allows me to have more passion toward my training and racing. When we achieve great things on our own, it doesn’t feel nearly as special.”
Collaboration is critical to the teaching profession. When we collaborate we are helping each other improve and ultimately, the kids are the ultimate beneficiaries. So the next time you are asked to collaborate with someone and you think that you do not have time for that... think about this article. I challenge you to tell me how you do not have time to collaborate?
Ultimately, we all win.
Think. Achieve. Succeed.

AMCMS SPED Tip of the Week
Rebuilding Rapport
At the start of the school year, we focus a lot of our efforts on getting to know our students and developing relationships with each of our students. As the year gets going and things start getting more crazy, though, our explicit focus on relationship-building and maintenance can sometimes land on the back burner.
In the most difficult times during the school year and with our most difficult students, it’s important for us to make sure that our relationships with students are a priority. It’s especially important that we work to rebuild rapport with our students after they have had a behavioral difficulty.
It’s the little things that matter:
At the end of class, tell the student that got pulled into the hall for a behavior discussion that you appreciate them turning it around.
For students that needed redirecting within the period, let them know they did a good job getting on track and taking care of business.
For the student that was not in your class because they were in a discipline situation, take a private minute at the start of class when they return to let them know that you’re glad they’re back and that we’re going to have a great day.
The little things that we say and do each day can either build up our relationship with students or break down our relationships with students. Our time and efforts are much better invested in building up our relationships.
Technology Tip of the Week
Microsoft Teams
As you know, all of our students have Microsoft accounts. One of the tools you can use is Microsoft Teams. Microsoft Teams is a digital hub that brings conversations, content, and apps together in one place. Educators can create collaborative classrooms, connect in professional learning communities, and communicate with school staff all from a single experience in Office 365 for Education.
There are a few quick resources for you below:
- A handout to explain how to set up class rosters
- A video on how to get started with Microsoft teams
