County Central September Hawk Talk
'Home of the Hawks'
Principal's Point
Dear Parents & Guardians,
For those families who are new to our school, welcome! To our returning families, welcome back! We are excited to be starting a new school year and to have our students back. We trust you all had a safe and restful summer break and that our young people are refreshed and ready to learn.
I am pleased to introduce some new staff members to our school:
Mrs. Wendy McAdam will be teaching Senior English Language Arts;
Mr. Josh Holloway will be teaching Biology and Science;
Ms. Taylor MacLeod will be teaching Junior and Senior Social Studies;
Mr. Steven Gill will be covering our Music classes as well as CALM 10 and Health 9 while Mr. Rodgers is away; and
Mrs. Nicole Mattson has taken on the role of Family School Liaison Counselor.
Please join us in welcoming them to our community :)
We are pleased to be able to offer our students a variety of supports this year. Please feel free to contact the following staff members at any time:
Mrs. James - Learning Support Teacher
Mrs. Phillips-Jones - Making Connections Worker
Mrs. Mattson - Family School Liaison Counselor
Mrs. Dobson - Learning Commons Facilitator & Career and Academic Counselor (including post-secondary planning and scholarships)
Mrs. Bowden - Off Campus Coordinator (R.A.P, Work Experience, Green Certificate, and Dual Credit Programs)
While we are looking forward to starting a new school year with minimal COVID-19 safety measures in place, it is still imperative that students stay home from school if they are unwell. If your child has any symptoms, we ask that you keep them home until they are feeling better. Any students who become unwell while at school may be asked to go home. Our school will continue with our enhanced cleaning protocols and recommend students continue to practice good hand hygiene and physical distancing, and while masking is no longer required, we support any students or staff members who wish to continue wearing a mask while at school.
Over the next few weeks, our staff will be working hard to review materials from last year and assess where our students are at with their learning. Parents and guardians are encouraged to contact their children's teachers to discuss any concerns they may have regarding learning losses during COVID, academic progress, and how students can be supported at home. As always, we welcome your feedback and questions. If you would like to get in touch with either myself or Mr. Monts, please call 403-485-2223 to set up an appointment.
I wish you all a safe, engaging, and enjoyable school year!
Sincerely,
B.Sc.Kin., B.Ed., M.A., M.Sc.
National Day of Truth and Reconciliation
September 30, 2022, is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a federal statutory holiday established “to recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools.” In honour of this important day and with deep respect for the Indigenous communities who have long advocated to have the brutal legacy of residential schools recognized, the Palliser School Division will be observing this day as a non-operational day for the 2022-23 school year.
Palliser is committed to advancing Indigenous human rights through truth and reconciliation. As you may know, prior to this year, our staff have worked together to diligently promote awareness about the history and legacy of the Residential School system by observing Orange Shirt Day. Orange Shirt Day was designed to commemorate the residential school experience, to witness and honour the healing journey of survivors and their families, and to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation.
It is imperative that we as a community bear witness to this legacy and to join in the collective efforts to rethink our understandings of, and attitudes toward, the Canadian past and present. At Palliser, we pride ourselves on living and learning in community: the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation offers us a chance to listen and learn from people in our communities whose experiences and knowledge must inform our way forward.
Athletics
We enjoy having the stands and chairs full of spectators again. As always a huge thank you to our parent volunteers who step up to make sure the tournament and concession is organized and runs smooth!
