The Great Migration

Trevor Hemmersbach

Key Points

1. 6 million African Americans moved from the rural south to the cities of the north, Midwest and west from 1916 to 1970.

2. This had a huge impact on urban life in the US

3. During the Great Migration, African Americans began to build a new place for themselves in public life

4. The Segregation after Civil War was known as the policies of Jim Crow or Jim Crow Laws

Even though African Americans migrated to have a better life, they were not treated as equals. Female immigrants had a very hard time finding work. African Americans were hired during strikes and then fired when the strikes were over again.
