Principal's Message

Greetings Bobcat Families,

I cannot believe this is the last edition of The Bobcat Blaze for 2020! Thank you to all stakeholders for your role in making this unique school year as positive of an experience as possible. I am so proud to be at the helm of this amazing school family. We had such a blast with our holiday dress up themes this week. Thank you to all who participated! Parents, please remember that students will not physically return to campus until tentatively January 19th. Following Winter Break, students will receive instruction January 4 - 15th. Attendance is crucial so please prepare your students for this change and stress the importance of completing all assignments and getting them turned in to teachers to maintain their progress. I wish each of you a relaxing, memorable, and most importantly SAFE holiday season. We will see you back here in Bobcat Country in 2021!!

DISTRICT NEWS

A Message from Richland One Superintendent

December 14, 2020

Dear Richland One Parents and Staff,

As we approach the end of the 2020 calendar year, COVID-19 continues to have a profound impact on the nation, state and our local community, including Richland One. Our Restart Strong Reopening of Schools Plan has been in place and in operation since the start of this academic school year. As a part of the plan, on October 26, we transitioned to Phase 2 (Hybrid) of our Phase-In Model, while other students continued their learning through the yearlong Virtual School Program model. Along the way, there have been adjustments to the plan based upon science, data and circumstances. This includes changes in keeping with recommendations and guidance from health officials.

That said, we have to acknowledge the increases in COVID-19 incidence rates that have occurred in recent weeks. In addition, other factors such as staff availability cause us again to evaluate our plan at this time. Given the current high incidence rates and the likelihood that these rates will increase after the Winter Break, Richland One will return to eLearning beginning Monday, January 4, 2021. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 data and staff availability in anticipation of a return to Phase 2 (Hybrid) on Tuesday, January 19, 2021.

Please note the following information:

  1. Richland One will move to eLearning Monday, January 4, 2021 through Friday, January 15, 2021.

  2. Students will receive live virtual instruction. Flex Wednesdays will still be in effect during this time.

  3. Classroom assignments will remain the same during this time.

  4. The district will observe the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday, January 18, 2021.

  5. Hybrid instruction tentatively will resume on Tuesday, January 19, with AA days on January 19 and January 20, and BB days on January 21 and January 22. There will not be a flex day the week of January 18.

  6. Meal distribution information will be announced on the district’s website and social media. Parents also will receive notifications through the SchoolMessenger system.

In addition to monitoring activity at individual schools during this week, we will continue to evaluate data and work with our Task Force and health care professionals to determine metrics that could result in classroom or school closures after our anticipated return on January 19.

We thank you all for your flexibility and understanding during this transition. This is not an easy decision, but this adjustment allows us to maintain our focus on the safety of our students and staff.

Sincerely,

Craig Witherspoon, Ed.D.

Superintendent

  • Lower Richland High

Richland One Student Attendance Information for 2020-2021

As a parent or guardian you are responsible for ensuring that your child attends school either in person or virtually every day that school is in session. Please review the documents below for Richland One's attendance expectations.

Parents, students and staff can now get up-to-date information about COVID-19 cases in the district through Richland One’s new online tracking dashboard.

A link to the dashboard, which will be updated daily, is posted on the Restart Strong page on the district’s website www.richlandone.org/restartstrong. In addition to listing the number of positive and quarantined COVID-19 cases among Richland One students and staff, the dashboard includes the number of cases at each district school and administrative building. It also shows daily, weekly and year-to-date summaries of the number of positive COVID-19 cases.

“Richland One’s goal in creating the COVID-19 dashboard is to provide the most accurate and current information possible to our community,” said Richland One Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon. “Having the same data allows us all to work together to better protect our students and staff.”

COVID-19 data is compiled daily by the district’s Nursing Services office and Accountability, Assessment, Research and Evaluation department. The information shown on Richland One’s dashboard may differ from the reports from the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), which are updated on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Media inquiries should be directed to the Richland One Office of Communications.

Ms. Warren's Holiday Read Alouds

Here are some Holiday read alouds you can share with your class.

A Wish to Be a Christmas Tree - A sweet story about a tree on a tree farm who wants to be a Christmas tree but is too tall to be picked. His friends the squirrel, the birds, the deer do something special to help make his Christmas wish come true.

Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree - One of my favorite Christmas stories! ❤️ Mr. Willowby gets a Christmas tree, but it's too tall, so he chops off the top and gives it to his maid. She also snips off the top so it will fit her space and it keeps on going with the tree getting trimmed down and shared until the last little bit is in the home of a little mouse. It is the sweetest little story!

Hanukkah Bear - It's the first night of Hanukkah and 97-year-old Bubba Brayna is making latkes for her gathering later that evening. The smell of the latkes wakes a hibernating bear who comes to her door and Bubba Brayna, who doesn't hear or see very well, mistakes the bear for her Rabbi, and invites him in to light the menorah, play dreidel, and eat all the latkes.

Notes from the Nurse

Important reminders:

Hello Bobcat families!

Please, please, please be sure everyone in your household (6 months old and up) gets an annual flu shot. This is the single best way to prevent the flu. It takes about 2 weeks for antibodies to develop and provide protection, so it is definitely not too early!

Please contact Nurse Hurt with any questions or concerns.
