Summer Slice Vol. III

LA Staff News

Skill Building at LA

We transitioned our three skills (Empathy, Self-Awareness, and Self-Control) to a more student-friendly version (I care about others, I am reflective, and I am a healthy decision-maker).

As a staff we identified that we need to not only value these things, but we have to arm our kids with the skills to have them.

Further research supports what we have concluded:

“Emotion skills are especially important for students facing adverse child experiences because the psychological and biological stress responses that accompany trauma impact motivation and executive functioning. If children facing trauma have tools for dealing with their hurt, frustration, and stress, they too will have opportunities to learn and thrive.” (18)

I can say I am most excited about the time set aside this year at LA to teach our students HOW to become the BIG 3 that we value. Nick, Summer, and I have found some resources to make this work easier to implement.

If you have ideas for this area, I'd love to hear them. Currently, we have been compiling a Google Doc with ideas that can easily be implemented into one of our circle lessons.

Norrises to New York

My cousin graduated from high school, so we made a family vacation out of it! Brooks loved seeing Lady Liberty, a Yankees game is NOT like a Royals game, 9/11 was sobering, and we enjoyed Broadway, Times Square, Central Park, and the Empire State Building with all the other tourists! Jason tracked our 15,000+ daily steps, and Peyton learned about culture shock and stepping outside of your comfort zone! Busy--we plan to slip away to Table Rock in July for the relaxing part!

Don't forget to text me a pic and an update of your summer!
