Ray Marsh Drills
Fire Drills-Required monthly. The alarm is pulled to test that it is working in all areas of the building. Students follow safety routes to designated area(s) and all staff and students are checked and accounted for.
Tornado Drills-Required 3 times p/school year. Students make their way to our designated storm area, away from all windows and on the lower level. We have completed 2 drills this year, with the most recent being on Tuesday for Severe Weather Safety Week.
Code Red-Recommended monthly by SMSD/Shawnee police. In SMSD, this is the term we use as a total TAKE COVER measure for the protection of the students and staff, whose building has been infiltrated by a person attempting to harm them.
We teach three options in the event of code red to our staff and practice the first two with students:
Run: Get out of the building or area if you can do so with students safely.
Hide: Take cover to protect your students and yourself. Locked and barricaded classroom, closet, office, etc.
Fight: When all measures have failed, you must fight off the intruder.
Lockdown-secure the building, no access to the building is permitted and the classrooms are locked (teaching continues). Students and teachers outside should immediately come inside the building. Open lunch and recess should be suspended during a lockdown. Example for use would be if something in the neighborhood causes us concern we will go to lockdown which limits, or prevents, visitors to the office and all doors are to remain locked.
Dismissal Location Changes
At the meeting, the following changes were adopted and will be implemented for 4th quarter.
- A reordering of location of pickup. See photo for location. Older siblings will meet younger siblings at their designated location for pick up. 6th grade will dismiss from the lower level exit and use the stairs.
- Parent Pick Up: Teachers would love if parents pick students up at this location as our little ones sometimes run off without notifying the teacher. If a parent can meet them at the designated grade level cone, it would make the stressful time that much easier on our staff and ensure each student is safely dismissed for the day.
- Dogs/Animals-While our kids love to flock to animals that appear at dismissal, it creates a liability for families and Ray Marsh when they're here with 500+ students and families. Please refrain from bringing animals to dismissal time.
- Reminder to pull as far forward as possible when in the car loop. Teachers ask that students walk around the perimeter to meet you at your location. Please take a look at the photo below for our procedures.
