A Message From Our Principals
Dear families,
We are growing hearts and minds together! We have completed another year of the Kids Heart Challenge. During the challenge students engaged in heart healthy activities, learned about heart health, and raised money for research for the American Heart Association. This year we raised just over $8,300. Glacier Ridge has a long history of participating in the Kids Heart Challenge. With Mrs. Maule's twenty years of leadership, we have raised over $200,000 for the American Heart Association. A special thank you to Mrs. Maule and all the Glacier Ridge families!
Our Polar Bear Players have been working hard for months on this year's production of Beauty and the Beast. A special thank you to Ms. Wyman, Mrs. Pawlicki, Ms. Keating, Ms. Thomas, Ms. Anderson, and Mrs. Patricca for leading our Polar Bear Players. We are excited to be performing at the Raue Center again this year. Our whole school will cheer on our cast and crew for their first performance on Friday. Keep reading for the details on how to purchase tickets for our Saturday performance. We hope you are able to join us!

PBIS - Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports
All classrooms will be working on specific expectations throughout the school each week at Glacier Ridge. All students will spend time reviewing the expectations and engaging in discussions within the classroom to talk about what it looks like to be respectful, responsible, and safe in all areas of the school. Here is the upcoming schedule of lessons:
- Week of:
February 27 - Restroom
March 6 - Bus
March 13 - Field Trip/Assembly
Ask your child what it looks like to be respectful, responsible, and safe within the hallway, restroom, bus, and during arrival/dismissal, and help reiterate the expectations for our Polar Bears! Click here to see a document with all behavior expectations at Glacier Ridge.
Welcome to Art, Mrs. Regan!
Hello Glacier Ridge Families,
Many of you might remember me as an administrative assistant in the front office. Well, my journey at D47 has included time as a paraprofessional, admin assistant, and now I am coming full circle back to subbing. I have already completed two long-term assignments (a 3rd-grade teacher and an art teacher). Art is my true passion. My art degree from college has enabled me to create traditional and non-traditional art. My free time includes creating seasonal and holiday items (many out of old barn wood). These projects are what I bring to a craft show that I've been doing in the fall for the past 3 years. My motto has always been, "If you see it on Pinterest, I can most likely make it for you!".
I look forward to working with your children and encouraging them to take the art project I present and make it their own.
-Mrs. Regan

Virtual Parenting Sessions with Jackie Rhew
All District 47 families are invited to attend the final session of a four-part virtual parenting series with Jackie Rhew on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 @ 7pm via Zoom. The topic is Parenting with a Growth Mindset. Parents will learn how to use a growth mindset and help their child step out of their comfort zone, handle disappointment, set healthy boundaries, and increase motivation. These are valuable skills that correlate to engaging and succeeding in the school environment. This approach has proven successful with students who are fearful of failure, as it teaches them how to embrace a ‘bounce back’ mentality. Translation will be available in multiple languages via captioning in Zoom. To learn more and join the meeting via Zoom, visit the D47 website.

Sodexo Future Chef Competition
The 2023 Sodexo Future Chef competition will be held Thursday, March 23 at 4 p.m. at Hannah Beardsley Middle School. This year's theme is "a healthy side dish" and District 47 students in 2nd-5th grades are invited to submit recipes to the school via the recipe card linked below! Recipes will be reviewed by Sodexo and two winners from each school will be chosen to participate in the competition. In addition, this year kindergarten and 1st graders are invited to participate in a culinary coloring contest. Coloring sheets will be available at D47 elementary schools by March 1. Students who complete a coloring sheet can return it to their teacher, who will then forward it on to the cafeteria manager to be displayed in the school cafeteria. All recipes and coloring sheets must be submitted to school cafeteria managers by March 10, 2023. See the links below. Questions about Sodexo Future Chef events can be directed to Alicia Taylor-Bey, Sodexo general manager, at ataylorbey@d47.org.

2023 5Essentials Survey
The 5Essentials parent survey, administered online by UChicago Impact, is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of schools. It is intended to help school districts understand the conditions at each school and to help guide improvement. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. Parents are encouraged to take the survey for their child's school by visiting https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/. Parent identity and survey responses will be kept confidential and will not be connected to their student(s). Families can submit one survey for each child. The 5Essentials survey window will be open through March 31, 2023.
Cell Phones & Smartwatch Policy
Students are allowed to have a cell phone or smartwatch at school as long as it is turned off from 8:50 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cell phones must remain in the student’s locker at all times during the school day. Smartwatches are not to be used as internet access or cellular devices during the school day. Note: Elementary school lockers do not lock and the school/district is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen personal property. If a student needs to make an emergency call during the day, the student should request permission to go to the main office and use the phone. If parents need to contact their child during the day, they should call the school’s main office. Cell phones will not be allowed on field trips and should be set to silent/vibrate while riding to and from school on a school bus.
Exceptions - Students who require access to a cell phone, app or other electronic device to monitor a medical condition or fulfill an IEP or 504 plan accommodation will be allowed to carry their device during the school day. However, these students will be expected to use the device only for this purpose and must obtain prior approval from school administration.
Additional things to note: District 47 treats any electronic device with the capability to call, text, or take photos as a cell phone/smartwatch. If a student uses the device inappropriately and/or if it causes a disruption during the school day, the device will be confiscated and taken to the school office. See consequences of cell phone violations here.
Morning Arrival
To assist with the traffic in the morning, it would be extremely helpful for car riders to be dropped off between 8:30 and 8:45.
Guidelines for Absences
We are experiencing a higher absence level than normal. Please utilize these guidelines to assist with your decision on whether or not to send your child to school
Cold and Winter Weather Preparedness
During these very cold days please be sure your child comes to school dressed with warm clothing, hats, gloves, scarves, boots, etc. Although it might not be warm enough to go outside every day, whenever we can, we do get the children outside for some fresh air. The District policies on cold weather are as follows: 15 degrees or warmer – unlimited time outdoors; 0 – 15 degrees - 20 minutes outdoors; Below 0 - remain indoors
An extra pair of socks to keep in cubbies and lockers is also a great idea for those extra wet snowy days.
Families Communicating Immediate Needs
We want to remind families that teachers, staff, and principals prioritize teaching, learning and engaging with students during the school day. They are not expected to monitor their email while school is in session. Please allow 24 to 48 hours for an email response. If your concern is urgent, please contact the school’s main office. Thank you!
Visitors Entering the School
Please know that Mrs. Seisser or Mrs. Stark will follow the new visitor protocol. If you will be volunteering at Glacier Ridge, you will also need to follow our volunteer guidelines and complete a volunteer application. We appreciate your help in keeping our school safe!
