The Program

Yesterday, Aquin High School students, faculty and staff gathered in the Auditorium for the Veterans Day program. The program opened with prayer and then the reading of all veterans' names submitted by our Aquin families. Dale Gabel, Aquin History teacher and veteran, spoke of the sacrifices that the families of veterans make. He then introduced our guest speaker, Mr. Henry Saavedra.

Mr. Saavedra went into the Army at the age of 21 and served from 1968-1970 in Vietnam with the 19th Combat Engineers. While there, his duties included driving a Jeep and going head first into small underground tunnels to check for enemies. He was known as a “Tunnel Rat” and this was a very stressful and dangerous job. He attained the rank of Specialist 4 and earned the Army Commendation Medal with a V device for Valor, a Bronze Star with a V device, a Purple Heart, and a Vietnamese Purple Heart.

The message Mr. Saavedra left with the audience (in addition to a very honest description of his life as a veteran and his war experiences) was that when you see a veteran, tell him 'Welcome Home' and to 'thank him for his service to our country'. The entire audience gave Mr. Saavedra a standing ovation at the conclusion of his presentation.

'Thank you Mr. Saavedra and Welcome Home'
