Letter from Principal Nelson
Proud Residents of Smallville-
I’m sitting here writing this correspondence to you in the cafeteria on a rainy Friday morning. We’ve opened the doors up early today so our sweet students, who are made of sugar, do not melt in this October drizzle. Slight changes of pace and plans for our kids, but they have been through enough pivots these last few months to ensure a smooth transition and minimal disruption to their day.
Our kids are resilient. Our kids are adaptable. Our kids are able to swirl, pivot, and modify as needed to ensure their success. These strengths are hands-down the greatest traits we’ve developed during this seemingly unending pandemic. They have learned to improvise, adapt, and overcome.
Technology is no longer the lone source of how we learn, it is now relegated back to its original purpose; to supplement the learning that takes place in the classroom. But now, our kids have this amazing ability to utilize technology that is years beyond where they typically were just 19 months ago. These tools help them communicate their ideas, learn at their own pace, and collaborate with others in ways that Fortune 500 companies do.
Improvise.
Adapt.
Overcome.
The classrooms I visit several times a day are vastly different than how we finished up last year. Kids are in groups talking and sharing and working together on tasks and having loads of fun. Yes, they still have their Chromebooks with them, but it is no longer the source of their learning or their attention. The teachers and their fellow students are.
And life gets a little bit sweeter and back to normal each passing day.
Pooteeweet.
