Spotlight on PTA –
Position: Teacher Luncheon Chairs
Looking for a way to show how much we love and appreciate our teachers? The teacher luncheon chairperson(s) organizes lunches for all TCE staff on every early release day and one staff in-service day in July. The chairperson plans a total of 4 lunches and 4 snacks throughout the year. The position requires working with local restaurants to ask for donations and/or discounts. The chairperson will also create a signup genius to ask TCE parents for donations to go along with the lunch. There is also a budget given by the PTA. On the day of the lunch or snack, the chairperson sets up all the food, stays to help serve, and cleans up at the end of lunch. On the actual early release day, the time required is from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. In addition, the preparation time required for each early release lunch is about 3 hours. This is a wonderful position that is very much appreciated by all teachers and staff. Ideally, this is a position shared among 2-3 persons. For more information. please contact Tammy Platts: tplatts@bellsouth.net
Raleigh Little Theatre
Raleigh Little Theatre will visit 1st and 2nd grades for "Stories Alive!"
In this one hour workshop, students will participate in theatre exercises designed to sharpen skills every actor needs. A check in or introduction exercise invites students to think outside the box and engage their imaginations. Warm up exercises help loosen the body and tighten (focus) the brain. Movement exercises help young actors learn to communicate with their bodies. Vocal exercises teach students that the tone of their voices says more than the words themselves. Students then activate a story by embodying the characters, interacting with one another and the facilitator within the imagined world of the story.
Kindergarten Registration has started!
January 4 was the start of Kindergarten registration for the 2018-2019 school year.
We are accepting registrations Monday – Friday from 9:30 – 2:00. The packet can be found on our website, bring that along with a proof address (power bill, gas bill or water bill), child’s birth certificate, photo ID for parent and the most current shot record to the Main Office during the designated times.
Upcoming Cultural Arts Performance
Number Drummer creator, Troy Kryzalka, has worked in music education for over 15 years and has delivered his integrated math and music learning approach to thousands of children and educators. He has an amazing ability to reach creative “outside the box” thinkers that have been discouraged by the traditional ways of learning, and because of his focus on mathematics in music, he represents the increased value and importance of music in schools. Combining his musical ability, mathematical perspective, and creative teaching methods, Troy inspires, engages, and motivates children to understand math and music from a fresh new perspective, regardless of age or ability. Tracks 1 & 3 students will see the performance on Feb. 28 (rescheduled from Jan 19). Tracks 2 & 4 saw it on Feb. 8, be sure to ask your student about the show.
March 2 - Sandwiches and Salad Teacher Lunch
The next early release day is Friday, March 2, 2018. The TCE PTA will be providing sandwiches, wraps and salad from Ruckus Pizza, Pasta and Spirits, and we are asking families to donate assorted extras including chips, drinks, and desserts. Please sign up for items below and send them in to the TCE office by 9:15am on Friday, March 2nd. Non-perishable items may be sent in sooner. Please label all items "teacher lunch." If you have any questions, please email Kristen Conner at kaconner@gmail.com or Christine Hamm at cbhamm@gmail.com. The teachers and staff are so appreciative of these lunches - thank you for your support!

Frogapalooza is COMING!!!
The Frogapalooza cultural street fair is just a few weeks away, March 24. We are seeking volunteers in several areas: planning the arts & crafts activities, planning the games, and soliciting donations from local businesses.
If you are interested in helping out, please contact Maggie Demicco at maggie.demicco@gmail.com.
Jump Rope for Heart
Turner Creek Elementary will be participating in Jump Rope For Heart to help raise funds for the American Heart Association. The donations that are received will be used by the American Heart Association for research and educational programs to save lives from heart disease and stroke! Raising contributions is voluntary. All students will participate in a special jump rope day during a regular PE class time in February.
Family and friends are welcome to support your child’s participation by making contributions. Please convert all cash to a check(s) payable to the American Heart Association. You can also build a website and email family and friends for donations. The information to do this is on the parent letter that came home with the collection envelope. Don’t forget to ask donors if their employers have matching gift programs. This is an easy way to increase the contributions your child collects.

United Arts Update
Tony Peacock has been sharing his love of writing with students for more than 15 years. He has lived in all regions of North Carolina and has been a lifelong student of our state's diverse cultural and literary heritage. In addition to publishing fiction and creative nonfiction, Tony has worked as a newspaper columnist and written radio commentaries. He partners with teachers to enrich their curriculum goals and help students grow as writers. As a National Hollerin' Champion, he often rewards students at the end of residencies by briefly demonstrating traditional calls used by farmers as a form of communication and expression. Tony's impact on students and staff has been called "an amazing story of connecting and bonding."
Thank you to the United Arts and to the parents of TCE for supporting arts in our school!
