St Jerome's Newsletter
Week 8 - Term 4 (Thursday 5 December 2019)
Dear Parents and members of our school community
Don’t become totally preoccupied with your child’s academic abilities
but instead teach them to sit with those sitting alone.
Teach them to be kind.
Teach them to offer their help.
Teach them to be a friend to the lonely.
Teach them to think of others.
Teach them to share.
Teach them to look for the good.
This is how they will Change the World.
We are now into the first week of Advent and we patiently wait for the coming of our Saviour. Last Sunday, many of our students attended the Children’s Christmas mass. The first of the beautifully decorated Jesse Tree ornaments, made by Mrs Cipriano and her Art team were placed on the Jesse Tree.
This Sunday we will light the second of our Advent candles, representing faith and called “Bethlehem’s Candle”. Mica foretold the child Jesus would be born in Bethlehem, as was King David. At the 10am mass the next eight ornaments will be placed on the Jesse Tree.
The excitement around the school is growing as we prepare for our Carol Service this Friday evening. This event is the last in our school calendar for 2019 and there is an expectation that all children will attend to ensure that we finish the year together as one community…the St Jerome’s community! The program starts at 6pm and we ask that all children are seated in their designated places by the stage by 5:50pm.
This year our Year Five students and parents are organising a Sausage Sizzle and drinks starting at 4:45pm to raise funds for their camp next year. We hope that you will be able to support them or bring along your own picnic tea. The evening promises to be one of joy and laughter as our children entertain us with Carols and the Nativity story.
We will open the back gate off Minga place for excess parking and we ask that parents and families drive carefully onto the oval by the grass netball courts and park there. We look forward to seeing everyone there for a wonderful evening.
Teachers are still working on the class lists for 2020. This is an extremely difficult job and always causes more than a few grey hairs for those involved. We ask that parents trust the judgement of teachers and if their child is not with a particular friend, or the teacher they wanted, that they encourage their child to be resilient by looking for new friends and moving positively into 2020.
Next Wednesday, 11 December we have our Moving Up Day. Class lists will be posted that day and children will be told who their teacher will be for next year. At 2pm the children will move to their 2020 classroom and spend 40mins with their new teacher and fellow students.
Reports go out next Wednesday. All new parents should all have their log ins by now and existing parents are to use their existing log in to ensure they can access them. Please contact the office if you have any issues with your log in.
Congratulations on 10 years of service Geoff!
Today we paid tribute to our wonderful crosswalk attendant, Geoff, for ten years of service to the St Jerome’s school community. There have been times when Geoff has literally placed his life on the line for our children, when people drive carelessly and recklessly through the Crosswalk! Over the past ten years, Geoff has got to know hundreds of our children and their families by name and he is there for them in all weather, ensuring that they safely cross Rockingham Road. Geoff makes Jesus real every day by being the wonderfully cheerful person that he is. We are very blessed to count him as part of our community and we thank him most sincerely for the role he has played in ensuring the safety of our St Jerome’s families.

St Vincent De Paul Hampers. (Collection week 8)
There are struggling parents who are going without food so their children can eat.
Many disadvantaged families cannot afford to buy healthy food and often have to choose between paying a bill and putting a meal on the table.
More than four million Australians have experienced food insecurity with one in five children living in a food insecure household.
Vinnies volunteers provide food, clothing, furniture, utility bills and rental assistance as well as emotional support and advocacy to Western Australians who are doing it tough.
Every year at St Jerome’s we help families in the Cockburn area by providing hampers at Christmas to families in need.
This year we are again appealing to all our St Jerome’s families to support this very worthwhile cause so that when they are celebrating Christmas this year we know we have helped to make Christmas Day a little more special for a family in need.
This year we are doing things a little differently and assigning specific items to each class/year level so that we can make up identical hampers. We will be collecting items in class for the next two weeks. Please support us to help families in need in the Spearwood area.

First Fathering Project Event
On Monday evening the school celebrated the first official Fathering Project event since beginning the program at the end of Term 3. Under the guidance and organisation of Dom Morolla and Daniel Del Borello, approximately 30 dads and their kids enjoyed a summer evening BBQ complete with cool drinks and games for the children. It was great to see so many families at our first event, placing their support behind this important initiative. There were some great conversations to be had and children definitely appreciated the time to be with their dads and friends. There will be more events taking place in 2020 and information about these will be communicated to families in time. In the meantime, we would like to take this opportunity to wish all fathers and father figures all the best over the Christmas break, and we look forward to seeing everyone again in the new year!

CPSSA CRICKET WRAP UP 2019
Last Tuesday was the annual CPSSA Inter School Cricket carnival at Santich park.
We had been working all term on our cricket skills and we were very eager to get to the oval and commence play.
All our teams had a fantastic day and it was lovely to watch the boys/girls teams on the sidelines cheering the others on.
Both our A grade boys and girls teams finished in fourth place overall and the B division boys team finished in third place.
Well done to all teams.
Special thanks to Mrs Vinkovich for all her time coaching and assisting on the day. Thanks also to Mrs Coy for assisting with coaching on the day.
Thank you to all the parents that came along and supported the children.
