What is a RAFT?
A R.A.F.T. is content-rich writing where learners are asked to consider their role, audience, format, and topic. When we were studying rapid changes of the earth's surface learners were asked to choose their role, audience, format, and natural disaster. The following is just of of many wonderful writings I received. This young lady did such an incredible job, that she had me worried! My Grammarly checker is currently telling me that my text has a tone of worry. Clearly, she made some great points! Please enjoy Lasya's work, and please don't worry! This is a work of fiction!
Role: Tourist on a Vacation
Audience: Family - Mom
Format: Urgent Email
Topic: Earthquake
Dear Mom,
I am alive and perfectly fine. Please don’t worry about me.
I know you might want to hear what happened. I was heading to the Sasak Trail
of Lombok, Indonesia. All of a sudden my world turned upside down. Everything
was shaking uncontrollably. At first, I thought it was my crazy imagination going
ahead of me, but I was wrong. Cracks were chasing me. I was running like the
fastest runner in the whole world, but Nature’s Fury was quicker. I fell down
waiting to see heaven. I got down with a huge thud. I saw total darkness and
felt tremors. Luckily I got my phone and turned on the flashlight. I tried calling
you, but I had no signal! It was almost like an hour and I was hungry. I had some
packets of chips and half a bottle of water. I ate and drank some water and
saved some drops. I was wondering if I would see this world ever again. Adding
to my nightmare, my phone was dead. I’ve been stuck there for almost 4 hours
and my last drop of water was over. I had a panic attack and I almost went to
heaven.
As I was seeing heaven, I saw a rope dangling. It’s heaven indeed! I saw angels
talking to me and helping me wake up and pulling me up. I saw Earth again. I
was rushed to the ambulance and was given first aid. In about 30 minutes I was
up. But the world around me was not the same. I could hear cries and see only
damages. When I stood and took a stroll. I saw the rescue team helping people
around. When I spoke to one of the officials, I came to know an earthquake of
magnitude 6.2 had struck. Eight people had died so far. I felt sorry for them. The
officer said many were stuck in between the buildings and the teams were
rescuing them. He still doesn’t know the total number of people who were
affected. I volunteered and helped them. As I was helping, I could see the world
around me was shattered and collapsed. The buildings that I admired, the parks
that I enjoyed was no more. I can only see damaged roads and dust all around. I
know that this place is going to take a long time to be normal.
You know this is the first time I’m experiencing nature’s fury and you are not
with me. I just couldn’t believe how a wonderful day can be turned upside down
within minutes. I was lucky to survive such a horrifying event. I will never ever
forget this day in my lifetime and I am thankful to be alive!
I just want to be back home. I took some help and reached the airport. The
airport was full of many tourists. After I cleaned myself, I came to know that
many places felt the tremor and faced horrible damage. People are suffering
without power, food, and proper water to drink. Almost 300 people died and
1000 are missing. They have issued a tsunami warning too. The epicenter of the
earthquake was near Java Island with a magnitude of 6.2. This is all I know so
far. By the way, I lost my phone and I’m just dropping an email to let you know
that I am all good. I just can wait to see you and share what I have been
through.
I will email you once I get my flight details.
Love,
Lasya
