Math Updates
In Math this week, we started Unit 7 which deals with Measurement and Fractions. We started by comparing the volume of containers using Liters and Milliliters. We then explored arrays, volume, and equal shares to get us ready for further fraction work. Then we solved number stories involving time, mass, volume and length. Finally we began digging into fraction again. We partitioned fraction stripes and used them to name and compare fractions. We also learned how to represent fractions on a number line.

Building a READING LIFE
In Reading this week, we continued our unit on Character Studies. Our mentor text is a personal favorite of mine, Because of Winn Dixie. We used our main character Opal to study her actions and feelings. We noticed her patterns and then we used those patterns to develop a theory about her. Once we had developed our theories about Opal, we challenged ourselves to dig deeper, asking, "Why might the character be this way?" and then we thought, "My bigger idea about her is that..." Finally, we learned that once we understand a character in deeper ways, once we have a sense of who the character is, what they tend to do again and again, and what they really want, then we as readers can use this knowledge to predict.

Word Study
Well...due to snow, AGAIN, our word study test will be postponed until TUESDAY!! ( just in case ;))
Monday nights- Students are to sort their words and record them in their notebooks. They are to also record their discovery or rule for the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students should sort their words and read them as they sort. They can practice writing them on paper, whiteboards, or typing them. NO WRITTEN homework is required on these nights.
Thursday nights- Students are to ask an adult to quiz them on their words. They write the headers and then record the words as they are called out. The adult should use the notebook to correct the sort and ask the student to practice any words that were spelled incorrectly. This can be done on the back of the homework sheet. This paper should then be returned to school Friday morning.
Friday- there will be a test given
