FOR YOUR INFORMATION

Cheltenham African American Alliance: SOAR Saturday Program; Next SOAR, January 24th!

The Cheltenham African American Alliance (CAAA) kicked off their new SOAR Saturday program on Saturday, November 29th. Open to all District students, the first SOAR Saturday event featured various student-centered activities designed to motivate young minds. Grand Hank Productions educated and entertained students with “hands-on” science experiments. His lively presentation, complete with music and dancing, stirred the interest of many budding scientists in the room. Also, SOAR attendees were invited to create framed vision boards from a variety of art and craft supplies. CAAA Board members, Taryn Flood and Tonya Bailey encouraged the creativity and imagination of each student. This self-esteem builder was framed and taken home as a reminder to each of the greatness that lies within. SOAR students are mentored and coached through the “Philly Pride” and "YEC” (Youth Empowerment Coalition) basketball programs. The programs, which remind students of the importance of daily exercise, feature team building activities, rigorous skills and drills that bolster the body, mind and spirit.

Save the date for the next SOAR Saturday event on January 24th from 11 to 2 p.m. at LaMott Community Center.

CAAA Board member, Glenside teacher and Challenge consultant, Angela Melvin-Schell will facilitate workshops for STEM, and “Games of skill and challenge.”
Wyncote Elementary teacher, Amy Flynn, will lead an “Hour of Coding”. Stay current on SOAR Saturday information and other CAAA activities at www.cheltenhamalliance.com.
