Maillet's Kindergarten Newsletter
Week Of February 9th
Highlights from last week....
In Phonics, we focused on spelling words with several digraphs (wh, th, ch, sh, and ck) and searched for these types of words in text. The children loved being word detectives and enjoyed finding these words in text and practiced reading them. We also worked on CVCe words. Again, they loved finding these words in text and loved being able to read them!
We also practiced writing our first and last name on our work. Please reinforce this at home as well.
In Reader's Workshop, we focused on looking at the picture, the first letter and then looking through the word and sound out the letters that we know. This is where the majority of the class is with regards to their reading. Have them show you some of their strategies at home. They are really doing great! Please keep reading those books that I have been sending home weekly with your child. Also, please practice the new sight words that went home last week. The more sight words they know, the better readers they will become!
In Math, we continued to compare using words more, less, fewer, same as and equal. We counted and used numbers to find out which is more or less.
In Science, we learned about groundhogs and shadows.
In our Second Step program, we continued to learn about our own feelings.
A peek at our learning this week....
After completing a comprehensive set of assessments, I will be changing groups around again based on the skills they need to work on. Some of the groups will focus on beginning and ending sounds. Some of the groups will focus on short vowels sounds. Some of the groups will focus on blends, digraphs and CVCe. I will be working with your child based on their needs. Our main phonics focus lesson will be on digraphs this week. We will practice spelling them and seeing them in text. I know it sounds like we spend a lot of time on specific skills, but in order to obtain mastery, the children need to practice, practice, practice! We actually practice by playing fun games, so the skill may sound redundant each week, but the games we play are different and engaging. This way they are not bored doing the same activity each week!
We will continue to practice writing our first and last name on our work. Please reinforce this at home as well.
In Reader's Workshop, we will be focusing looking through the word and sound out the letters that we know. I will also be introducing "Flippy Dolphin", which is when you come to a tricky word, you can flip the vowel sound. Have them show you some of their strategies at home. They are really doing great! Please keep reading those books that I have been sending home weekly with your child. Also, please practice the new sight words that went home last week. The more sight words they know, the better readers they will become!
In Math, we will be completing our second round of MAP testing and also be completing our end of module 3 assessment.
In Science, we are going to be learning about dental health. We will read several books and also create a tooth model to help us learn how to floss and brush correctly.
In our Second Step program, we will continue to learn about our own feelings.
Our author of the week will be Ezra Jack Keats. We will read several of his books and discuss the similarities and differences of each of his books.
VALENTINE'S DAY PARTY- FRIDAY, February 13th
We will also be having our Valentine's Day party on Friday, February 13. If your child chooses to participate, please have them ONLY sign their name to their valentines. We have 24 students in our class. This makes the distribution process a whole lot easier if we do not have to sort through the valentines looking for names. If funds are tight and you cannot afford to purchase valentines, we discussed that homemade valentines are just as great as store bought. Let me know and I can send home some construction paper for you. If you would like to send in a yummy treat for the party, please let me know by sending in a note in your child's red folder. Thank you in advance for you help!
SIX FLAGS READING CHALLENGE
Many parents are asking what the class needs for supplies. We could use some Clorox Wipes and paper towels. Thank you in advance.
Please practice letters and sounds with your child nightly! Thank you!
