Week of January 8, 2023 - Academy of St. Benedict the African

Week of January 8, 2023

Dear Families,

The video above has highlights of this week's bulletin.

As we returned to school last week, all scholars and staff members wrote a SMART goal for the new year. As a school community, we gathered and added our goals to our goal catcher. The goal catcher sits in the cafeteria to remind each of us to stay focused on our goal. We know that excellence happens on purpose!

Congratulations to our basketball teams. We had a great Saturday! Our 5/6 team showed tremendous grit as they pulled out a win in a tough double-overtime game. Our 7/8 team was dominant in a 27-6 victory. Most importantly, both teams exemplified. We are better together!

This week all K-8 scholars will take the winter diagnostic on iReady. Please be sure your child is at school on time unless ill. The winter diagnostic provides important growth data on each student and informs future instruction.

On Monday, our Student Leadership Council will meet with me to put the final touches on our Catholic Schools' Week activities. One of special note is our January 31st Family Art and Literature night from 5-7 pm. Families will have fun with art projects, enjoy dinner, and take home a STEM kit. Sign up on this sheet.

The first tax credit scholarship application (covers up to 100% of tuition and tech fees) is Thursday the 12th at 8 AM. Go to Big Shoulders Fund SGO at 7:50 AM (get the kids to school by 7:20 so you have plenty of time to get ready) and be ready! At 8 AM, hit apply and move fast - every second matters! This is for students entering K-8 for the 23-24 school year.

Registration opens for the 23-24 school year on January 17th! The registration fee from 1/17 - 2/10 is just $25! We have lots of incentives! One of special note is that families registering between 1/17-2/10 will receive a $25 gift certificate (per child) to the Spirit Wear Store. The $25 fee must be paid to receive the gift certificate. It's a win-win - You reserve your child's seat for next year, AND you can purchase some spirit wear!

Additionally, if we can get the entire 7th grade Class of 2024 registered, each scholar will receive a Class of 2024 hoodie!

There are incentives for all classes so register early!

We still need masks. The rate of COVID, FLU, and RSV infections remains high. Masking is a good preventative measure, especially for those who are not vaccinated for COVID and/or FLU.

Five hundred children's disposable face masks (no cloth) will earn 2 PAWS and 1000 masks for 4 PAWS.

The masks can be sent as a gift if you order from Amazon. Please add your name to the gift receipt for proper credit.

Here are some options!

Save the Dates!

It's that time of year again! Applications for Tax Credit Scholarships for the 23-24 school year will open in January. As always, time is of the essence in the application process.

We recommend that all families apply to both Big Shoulders and Empower Illinois.

Big Shoulders SGO's application date is January 12th at 8 AM. Be on the site at 7:45.

Empower Illinois' application date is January 18th at 6:30 PM. At 6:30, you can enter some necessary information, and at 7 hit apply.

Over 130 of our scholars have Tax Credit Scholarships this year. It's a great program for families and for the school.

Tuition Payments & Action for Children

Each family has an account in FACTS to monitor their tuition account. Payments for most are due on the 17th of the month. A few of our families have different due dates to accommodate pay periods. As a reminder, late fees are automatically assessed on the 4th day after the due date.

It's essential that payments are made as scheduled so that the school can meet its obligations.

Please contact me if you have concerns.
