LANSDOWNE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
MARCH NEWSLETTER ~ 2022
PRINCIPAL MCBRIDE MONTHLY MESSAGE
Spring is in the air! This is the time of year when we get to watch the Earth come back to life with the greens and vibrant colors blooming all around us. The warmth of the sun fills us with energy and enthusiasm to be outside. You can feel the positive energy in the building as we can literally see more smiles, as the mask mandate has moved to optional in BCPS.
The end of quarter 3 is quickly approaching and concludes on Friday, April 1st. Our students and teachers are working extremely hard in the classroom and you too families working hard to support each and every day. This strong partnership is evident in our increased student progress!
In honor of Read Across American week which always takes places in the month of March this is a reminder that reading as a family is always an enjoyable experience and reading aloud to your child is the number one suggestion from reading experts across the county. Reading aloud to your child, particularly in an engaging manner promotes literacy and language development, improves reading ability, and perhaps most importantly, fosters the love of books and reading. Reading aloud to your child requires only a book and your willingness to spend a little quality time with your child. While the sacrifices are few, the benefits are many. Your child will learn to read better, think more critically, imagine more richly, and become a passionate and lifelong reader. So take time with your child and share the enjoyment of a good book. https://hes.rcstn.net/common/pages/DisplayFile.aspx?itemId=7296271

BCPS MASK UPDATE/ACTUALIZACIÓN DE LA COMUNIDAD DEL 28 DE FEBRERO Y 8 DE MARZO DE 2022
INCLEMENT WEATHER PLAN/VIRTUAL SCHOOL DAYS
According to weather forecasts, some parts of the state may experience inclement weather overnight and into Friday morning, February 25, 2022. As we continue to monitor the forecast, we want to provide you with an update on where we are with inclement weather days and potential changes to the school year calendar.
BCPS has used all five of the inclement weather days allotted for this school year. If BCPS schools are closed for one more inclement weather day, the school year will be extended from Thursday, June 16, 2022, to Friday, June 17, 2022.
The Maryland State Department of Education is allowing BCPS the option of converting inclement weather days to virtual instruction days. When inclement weather is predicted, BCPS will notify families if we are transitioning to virtual learning. Students and staff will be reminded to take devices, chargers, and other instructional materials home. More details can be found in a February 24, 2022, community update.
Entries for the annual BCPS Haiku Poetry Contest will be accepted from Monday, February 28, 2022, through 4:45 p.m. on Friday, March 18, 2022.
This year, BCPS students of all ages are asked to write haiku on the theme of "dream." Each student may enter only one haiku, and it must be an original poem.
All haiku must be submitted using the 2022 Haiku Contest Form. A winning haiku will be chosen at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Winners will be announced in late-April and will receive prizes.
